Hi,
I put some brug cuttings in water about 5 days ago. i checked them this morning and they are developing grey/black mould just under the water surface.
I put some Superthrive and some peroxide when I changed the water. Is it enough?
Should i wash the cuttings?
Any tips/help very welcome!
Thank you.:o)
mould in brug cuttings (water)
The peroxide should do the trick. As soon as they develope their white "nubbies" i would pot them up.
Hi there!
Thank you Gone2seed. I have this giant CG that I am trying to make cuttings of.
It is about 3 metres tall at the moment.
Thank you for your help!
Where do I get Superthrive?
Shirleyd
I have only seen it at Walmart.:o)
I got some at Lowe's this spring.. good luck with your cuttins Spider. I'd keep an eye on them and change out the water/peroxide every other day. Were they green or semi woody? Semi woody are easier for me to root.. -B
Hi B,
Thank you for wishing me good luck!:o)
Some are green wood (the top growth) and some semiwoody (bottom half of the branches).
U r welcome! Sounds like you're doing it right.. lol . Sometimes I put in water and wait for nubbies and then pot, sometimes I pot em up without, sometimes they have roots in water before I get to them.. Don't give up, it'll happen.
Superthrive is mostly vitamin B1, buy some at the 'human"pharmacy, throw a tablet on a gallon of water and voila!
Thank you auntB! I will let you know how they do.:o)
Clemen, wow, I didn't know that. Last week I sent a bottle to England as it is not sold there.
it's ok Spider, if you look at he components you will see that that is the main ingredient and I love superthrive, no need to mix anything, just a little pricier than the vitamin stuff!
Clemen! Why didn't you tell me that before?
You never asked Aunt b, and I love u!
:oP Clemen, love u 2.. :) teehee Need to see what kind of B vitamins I take everyday...
Take some for that toe my girl, you know what I mean!
(sweetie Clemen!:) Spider, how are those x-moldy cuttings doin?
Hi Aunt,
Still some black spots but I am changing the water and using some peroxide.
Thanx for asking.:o)
Thought you'd have a better report.. :) Can you take a pic so we can see? I wonder if alchol (rubbing kind) instead of the peroxide would help more... Just a couple drops .... DON'T try it, yet... hope someone who's tried it will post here... How bout some new cuttings?
Hi Aunt,
Have just checked them. Still some grey spots but less than before. Some of them are starting to develop roots at water level but the bit below the water is getting a bit soft and jelly like. Is it OK?
I only have two branches left on the CG. Some DGers asked for cuttings so I cut most of it off and sent to them. The two branches that are still there are covered in tiny flower buds. I will wait until after the brug finishes flowering and will try rooting the rest of the plant.
I have no idea where the camera is. Last I saw it, it was with my son...
Aunt,
I al so did another experiment.
About two weeks ago I cut down two bit branches of the brug, (about 5 ft high). I put them inside a plastic bucket with some water and a cheap fish pump.
They are starting to root and their roots are bigger than the ones growing on the small cuttings. Maybe the secret is the pump.:o)
Another product to try is Physan 20. I'm using it now to rid my begonias and various gesneriads of botrytis. I also use it to serilize pots and work surfaces. It is labeled for controlling bacteria and fungi in cut flowers, so I thought it would be good for your cuttings in water. Fair warning, this product is not to be taken lightly. It is toxic to fish. Precautions must be taken, but it is very useful for many applications. Go to their website for full details (just google Physan 20, you'll find it). Good luck.
Hi Wandy,
thank you very much for the info.:o)
Anna, are your cuttings in warm water or the sun? Mine root best in indirect light at cool temps. I bubble mine all winter long in the basement.
Hi Viola,:o)
how are you?
Mine are on top of one of my plant shelves. I just had a look and they are rooting well. The bit below the water level is still a bit soft but there are lots of roots just at water level.
I hope you are well.:o)
I'd cut of the mushy stuff, if it were me. I like to have as much roots as possible when I transplant.
I'm still trying to hang in there, still unemployed over 2 years now. Here's another tip-don't get too old for the new workforce!
But thanks for asking :)
thank you Viola.
Good luck on the work front!
