My neighbors just got a 5 week old Pit Bull puppy.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

My neighbors just got a 5 week old pit bull puppy. I know, and you know that it is too young to be away from it's mother. I asked about toys for it and was told that they couldn't buy toys because they were saving up for it's shots. Good and bad news there - but since my sister owns a doggy toy store - toys will be arriving soon for "Wanda". (Wanda because that was the name of their Dad's fighting Pit Bull when he lived in Mexico.) BIG SIGH. Very nice people with four children from 16 to 10 months. I couldn't ask for better neighbors as they have tools and know how to use them. :) The children are very well behaved and are expected to do work around the house and yard.

This will be the first big dog in the neighborhood and you all know how much I love my cats - even the front porch charity cat. I do know that 1) dog fighting is illegal in Connecticut and 2) Pit Bulls are wonderful dogs except that they are animal agressive (so my sister says). I have already stopped Wallingford and Holly from going outside - but Wally is a pistol and he sometimes gets out and Meeyow (CC) runs the neighborhood with everyone else's cats. I need to do my best to make sure that Wanda will not chase and kill cats and the neighbor's small dogs. What can I do? I thought that Wanda should be a regular visitor at my house for a meet and greet while she is still young. What are your suggestions? (Maybe she should meet the giant Sam - my Maine Coon first.:))

I looked up all the discount vaccine services locally for them and found out that we are in heartworm country and will pass the information on to them if it comes up in conversation. What should this 5 week old puppy be eating? What I got as to the food situation from the 16 year old left me unclear as to what they would do now that the can food the "breeder" gave them is gone. They do have a nice, pink harness for it and a leash which is very good as their yard is missing a gate to the back yard. :( They do watch The Dog Whisperer on TV - so that is good. I want to be a good neighbor and I want the existing small animal population to be safe.
