what are your thoughts/experiences on heartworm treatment?

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

i'm not talking about prevention, but treatment for a hw positive dog.

long story, but we ended up "adopting" a neighbor's dog. she's been a local fixture in this area for about 5 years now. the people who originally took her in had her spayed (after at least one litter that i know about) and she was given a rabies shot, but nothing else. i've been treating her for ticks and fleas since early spring after bosco died. she would never come over here because she was afraid of bosco. she loved our new guy, jasper, instantly and so started hanging around every day.

she became very sick in may, was on death's door, lying in our front yard one sunday. we took her to the ER and since then she has remained with us. the former owners have never called or inquired about her although john did go over to their house and tell them about the whole thing and how we would be giving antibiotics, etc. and she would be staying inside with us.

anyway, we took her to the vet for her yearly shots and a follow-up blood work just to make sure everything was back to normal. i kind of figured she had heartworms and she does.

so now we will begin treatment fairly soon but i'm wondering if it is the right thing to do in all cases. i will be getting the blood work results back today and have been googling this morning. she showed 2 red dots on the tester but i'm not sure what "class" she is in. i'll have to ask the vet today. the link i'm posting is exactly the treatment plan that has been laid out for her. i'll add the link in a minute. have to go back and copy it. here it is: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?A=610
