I have been told that my hardy Hibs will need to be cut down for the winter and that they will grow back each spring. I would like to root the pieces I cut down to share. What's the easiest method? I'm not real good at rooting per past experiences, LOL!
Can someone describe the best way to root Hibiscus cuttings?
Guys? Gals? Any suggestions?
To be honest, I've never had much luck rooting them. Maybe a couple have made it after being in water and developing a caloused end. I then put those in soil and they made it, but most have always just rotted. I hope someone comes by with a sure fire way of doing it.
All I do is take cuttings and stick them in water. After a short period you'll see root buds that will eventually turn into the real deal. Course I've only done this with tropical hibiscus but I bet it'll work with hardy ones too.
I just stuck the ends in rooting hormone, then on into potting soil. They rooted okay. I'v only done a few.

I took cuttings from a friend that had a hardy hibiscus that I didn't have and it never seemed to set seed. I put them in small pots with a tray of water under them.. Over the top of each I put a little plastic sandwich bag to keep the humidity up around the leaves. I set them in my small greenhouse.. I don't think I would set them in the direct sun. Anyway.. It looks like maybe 2 out of about 6 cuttings will make it.
Good Luck..
I cut mine back and just stick them straight in the ground amd keep watered. I have a good success rate. This year I took cuttings of quite a few along with other things and in a pot with potting soil I just stuck them in randomly. I had night blooming jasmine in there too. I kept it watered when I watered my other pots and they rooted. to me it was really easy. But give me a brug and I kill it with love.
I just used miracle grow potting soil or behind the a/c stuck them in the ground. The ones in the pot really did better as they had a little morning sun but only a few early hours.

I just take cuttings and place in a jar of distilled water. Place in a location where they get plenty of filtered light, and no direct sun. This has been a good method for me on rooting just about any plant.
I have mine in water.
I have found that they root better in water if the container that is holding the water and cuttings is clear.

Rooting with water works better with an aqurium pump, and air stone. Mike
I have mine in perlite and keep it moist not soggy. I have about 10 right now that need to be potted up. I use 1/2 cup h2o2 and 6 drops super thrive per gallon of water to water with. I haven't lost very many.
These are the tropical ones also.

Susan, don't you have to take them(tropical) in every winter, and do they live that way every year.I know I had som tropical hibicus, and they didn't make it, on the other hand a cutting can winter inside.
Mike
I have a garage full of tropical hibiscus. I would assume that a cutting wouldn't be any different. I have some of the cuttings I have started, also in the garage. I have had these tropical ones for many years. They look like heck by spring, but they come right back out.
My hardy hibiscus on the other hand come back every year, bigger and better. I have never taken cuttings from the hardy ones.
