hibiscus vs. rose of sharon

Port Sanilac, MI

can anyone define the difference between hibiscus and rose of sharon for me?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

A rose of sharon is a particular species of Hibiscus, Hibiscus syriacus. It is one of the few species of hibiscus that would be hardy in your area.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I love the rose of sharon Hibiscus syriacus. They don't have the wonderful colors that the tropicals do, but they flower all summer long. I think they are toughas nails. I currently have 4 rose of sharon and 3 tropicals. I lost all my tropicals last winter when the ice storms took out the power for allof tulsa, 600,000 for a little over a week.

I have two Roseof Sharon, Altheas, that my Grandmother planted at this home 50 years ago....They are trees with trunks probably 6" in diameter. I love them for their pretty blooms, 2 toned purple and light pink, although their is no fragrance.
