Are cuttings considered a plant?

Lubbock, TX

When is a cutting considered a plant? When it roots or when it has leaves or both? Can you call a cutting a plant?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Well it is part of a plant. I usually call them cutting until they have roots, but then I may call them cuttings until they are a good size. I think it is what you feel like calling them for the first year.

Here's my rule of thumb, Hayu.

Cutiing, = I just cut it off and stuck it in the rooting medium.
Rooted Cutting = It won't come out with a gentle tug so I should probably dig it up and pot it NOW before it gets inconveniently enormous where it is.
Plant = I have HAD TO dug it up from the cutting tray, because it is growing many new bits and it NEEDS (LOL) its own pot and independent existence!

Does that help? Ciao, KK.

Yes! I was wondering what others thought. To me its a plant when it has established a large enough root system. One that, as you might say, is screaming hey I've out grown the crib! lol

This is way too close to that politically sensitive issue for me to comment on.
