Trouble reaching family

(Zone 7a)

Hi, all. I'm hoping someone can help me. We have family in Wilmington, NC and we haven't talked to them in a few days. We don't know if the power is out or if they've left town. They never tell us when they take a vacation and it's starting to worry me.

Anybody know if the power is out there? They have a cell but sometimes it doesn't work.

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

They may have evacuated as Hanna is predicted to come in land close to there. No power is not out yet it is supposed to hit land after 12:00 tonight.

Okay, that's good to know. We'll keep trying in the meantime.

I'm sure they are fine, Celia. It's early yet. Here's hoping Hanna just keeps weakening. If we hear any news, we'll pass it along.

even if they didnt leave, i wouldnt worry. even if hanna gets to hurricane strength, there would be damage only to trees shrubs, and minor damage to mobile homes. storm surge should be less than 6 feet at very most, from wht i am hearing. as of the 2:00 update, they are forecasting it to hit SC near the southern Grand Strand. any flooding should be minor

This is all reassuring. I feel better. This is their first year there. They wanted to buy a house in Wilmington but now they're thinking about closer to Raliegh or Fayetteville.

They did leave and are spending the next week in Raliegh.

Hanna was a real false alarm here in South Carolina. Got some much needed rain, but none of the "severe winds" the media alarmists were forecasting to keep their ratings up. Suspect the same is true in Wilmington. Your folks should be just fine. It was a wimp of a storm.

That's very good news. Thank you.

I remembered the year after hurricane Hugo, they made people evacuated and the interstate to Columbia and Augusta was jammed!

I have a DD who used to live in Atlanta. She moved to NC after. She said both places were wonderful. Beautiful places to garden. So green.

I'm sure she likes the traffic better in NC. I grew up in Charleston, but really like it here - except for the traffic. Still horrible since I came up to go to college in early 80's. NC is a beautiful place. Love the mountains. I missed it. Used to go up there all the time in college since my college boyfriend is from NC. I love the Xmas tree farm. My SIL is also from NC. They have a little place in Topsail.

My DH's work was closed down here a couple of years ago. They transfered to Fuquay. They paid for us to go there and see if we wanted to follow them. We were there for 3 days in November of 2005. The countryside was fabulously green. We had a flat tire while sightseeing and an older gentleman and his wife came out to help us. They even invited us to dinner after! I couldn't believe how friendly everyone was.
