need help with little pond

Lilburn, GA

Hi,

I am getting lots of toads and frogs in the garden so i thought a little pond would help them.

I bought something called plantainer. It is like a little round liner (26" diameter by 7" deep, 9 gallon). I am planning on getting a big pond one day but I can't at the moment so this should help in the meantime.

I am thinking of placing it on one of the borders that is in the shade for most of the day. I am going to put pebbles in the bottom and fill it with a hose.

Should I let the water rest before i pour it in the pond?

Will it work for the frogs/toads?

Could it overheat as it is small and i am in GA?

Is it a bad idea?

Any tips?

Thank you:o)

The water shouldn't affect your frogs at all. There are products that you can buy to "age" water and remove chlorine and other potentially dangerous stuff. Are you planning on moving the water? Otherwise water just sitting will attract mosquitos. The sound of water will also bring those froggies to your water feature.

Hi mothermole (I love your name).

I am planning on a bigger pond for next year, with running water. this is only an emergency one. It si too small to have moving water.

I think the mosquitoes would be part of the little tadpoles diet. i would always be fiiling it with fresh water that I could leave in a bucket for the chlorine to get out.

I made a mini pond for my toads and frogs to get a drink or wet themselves. it's a concrete leaf. I put some water lettuce from my overgrown shpere pond.
I think my cats get a drink here too.

Hi greyma,

I love your pond! Do you get tadpoles in it?

Spider:

What did you decide to do with the pond? In as much as you think the mosquitoes would make great frog food the water will get stagnant and smelly (and those mossies will be looking to bite someone-maybe you). Get a little circulation (think cheap like Menards) to get a pump for it. Believe me there will be other bugs in the water for the frogs to eat. I just cleaned out my pond and found some bizarre looking bugs in there . . . ehhhh!

Fill us in on what you decided!

Linda (AKA Moley)

BTW: My husband's pet name for me is Moley. He is from England and the English have a dislike for mole damage but also like them in a weird way. My husband thinks I am Mole-like because when he met me I wore glasses/contacts (had lasik a few years ago) and was blind without glasses just like a mole. I like to dig in my garden all the time, just like a mole. I have little diggy hands (his words-love is truly blind isn't it?) just like a mole. And I am (in his words) cute and cuddly (just like a mole). This was a fine nick name to me until I actually saw a mole in his mother's garden and I thought, ehh, yuck-not cute! But the nickname stays.

Ooooh noooo, Linda. Moles are lovely.

I lived in England before moving here and I used to see some around. I love them. There is a little mole like critter called shrew and it is the cutest thing!

My husband is from the UK also!

I am thinking of maybe getting a little solar pump as I would have to get a very long cord. what do you think?

In England I had a pond full of frogs and during the spring they would croak all evening. It was soooo lovely.
