IKE is a real hurricane cat 4 at the moment and nothing seems to be in it's way.
Looks like Hilton Head is going to close the schools tomorrow because of "high winds"??? Ya right, looks like someone wanted a three day weekend.
Hanna is heading North , Duck NC IKE looking scary
downscale babe, tcinmb, bdunn, beach barbie, lavina and anyone else in Hanna's path that I might have missed, hold on to your hats and STAY SAFE.
Thanks ardesia. Now we all have to watch out for Ike. I sure don't like all of this activity!! High winds expected for tomorrow.
Thanks, Ardesia . I think Lavina is more likely to get more distrubance than the rest of us. Downscale and tcinmb are the least likely to have problems. Then going up the coast it's me next, then beach barbie then Lavina.
Ran around most of the day putting patio furniture and grills into clients' and absentee owners' garages (I'm in real estate) and fielding phone calls from Northern owners about what happens during a Hurricane so I'm ready to call it a night. What happens in a hurricane?!! Don't ya'll get the weather channel up north??!! No, I was nicer than that so don't worry -- I'm just tired and felt like I repeated the same conversation many times today.
Walked to dog around the block and a number of houses in my neighborhood got to use their expensive custom hurricane shutters. We're 2 1/2 miles inland so I pray shutters are not needed -- if so, we're really in trouble. Since we won't get rain till tomorrow evening, I guess they don't mind living with no sunshine inside for 3 or 4 days till they can take them down again. Some will probably leave them up till Ike passes. Yikes! I couldn't stand to live with sunlight for that long! But what do I know?
But again, Ardesia, thanks for your good wishes. We keep our fingers crossed for all of us for Hanna and Ike.
Barbara
That is one of the reasons we don't have the shutters; I couldn't stand the darkness but that is probably silly since we wouldn't be here anyway, we are much closer to the water and flooding is our main issue. We are only a strong wave away from being but off from the mainland.
I understand they are manufacturing clear plexiglass shutters, that makes more sense to me. I am so nosy if I was inside I would want to know what was going on outside.
We are only expecting wind gusts in the 35 - 50 range but I am still wondering how I am going to walk the dog tonight. He is as big a wuss as I am. I truly feel for those who will experience the higher winds.
As I look around outside I still see flower pots around that should have been stowed. Nothing special in them but they could clutter up the neighborhood - a big no no here.
Get some rest Barbara, I have a feeling you are not going to get any tonight. Hopefully Lavinia and the other coastal gardeners have fled inland.
We are thinking of you all, take care.

This is from last night but it is still interesting.

I never thought about it but yes you would be trapped in your house with out being able to look out, that would be a little annoying. Lexan would work for shutter. You could just have someone make those up but I hope you don't mean you would leave them on the house like real shutters. LOL. I'm not rthinking the POA would like that idea.
Schools are closed and the wind is dead calm here, not seeing the big deal with Hanna.
im glad we are out today. i slept until 1:00... heaven knows i needed that sleep. i think it is policy that the schools have to close if there is a tropical storm watch or warning
she is only 4mph shy of hurricane status
I think there is a law in SC about wind speed and the buses. If the winds are over a certain threshold it is unsafe to operate the buses. I guess it is pretty hard to say just when the gusts are going to arrive.
We have had a few little gusts here and lots of steady rain. They are now talking about Hanna making landfall at McClellanville which is just north of Charleston. Thankfully it is still just a strong storm and not a hurricane.
i guess those in mcclellanville that were there for their last ''H'' storm are pretty glad it isn't going to be any worse
Be safe everyone. Looks like Ike might be headed for the gulf last time I looked at weather underground. Go away please!!!!
Can I ask for advice if anyone has applicable experience? I have a 7ft tall Bird of Paradise which is outdoors in a large pot.
It weighs a ton, so I only like to move it twice a year - out in the spring - in in the fall.
I know the wind will tear it up. Any ideas on how I could minimize that? Should I wrap it, or tie all the stems together, or turn it over and lay it on its side? Any of the above? None?
Thanks!
Deb
i would wrap and lay it over
So far, this storm has been a big bust. YIPPPEEEEE
Plenty of rain - which we needed badly - but no wind save some really tiny gusts early on.
Hope this pattern holds.
Thanks, Trent.
Same here so far, just rain.

youre welcome.. i wonder what mine looks like...
Good for you ardesia. I'm still waiting. Getting a few bands off and on. They're not too bad right now.
idk if its me but it seems to be gettin windier here, but i think the storm has already passed us
Now we've got tornado warnings out until 0500. I can handle a hurricane but tornado's worry me. You can't see them coming.
Had a big rain band (3/4") about 4:00 then nothing till a few minutes ago with a small shower. What's up? Not that I'm complaining.
It's really coming down now, raining sideways. Look out it's on the way!!
We've been getting alot of rain, but no wind to speak of, so far.
almost an inch of rain since last night... wind is about 20 mph. nothing much to worry about
I have been lurking for awhile, but want those on the coast to know that you are in my prayers. If you could send a little rain this way, it would be appreciated. My husband thought he was doing me a large favor by watering all the plants that I have planted on our 2 1/2 acres and we got a water bill for $391.00. 93,000 gallons in two months time. We could have filled five swimming pools. Oh well, my plants survived. Anyway, be blessed, y'all!
What a thoughtful husband. :-)
Got a good bit of rain and winds, but all is fine. My poor brugs took a beating, but I've propped up the ones that really went sideways so we'll see how they do. Now the task of putting everything back out on the porch after we're sure Ike is going elsewhere.
rhsundblad, thanks for the good wishes. Sorry about the water bill! Yikes! We'll try and send the next storm up to you. LOL!
Just dropping by to let y'all know that I'm sending prayers your way. I'm sorry I haven't posted earlier but have been looking for this forum for the past couple of days. Somehow I thought it was listed under "South Carolina" gardening. LOL Anyway, y'all take care and STAY SAFE!!
Hugs&blessings to you and yours ... ~Susan
IO1 and Rsunblad: Hello! Thanks for the kind thoughts. I can't speak for anyone else, and we're actually about 17miles inland, but we got 5 1/2" of rain last night and almost no wind. Whew!
And I do hope you get some rain soon, Rsundblad.
Deb
Well, we haven't had anything since Faye. Got lots of rain ... around 15 in and winds gusting between 35 and 40 mph but nothing out of the past couple. If Ike turns into the gulf, we could definitely see some rain, though. Our year for hurracanes was back in 2005? with Frances, George and Ivan. I'll be keeping an eye out and sending prayres. :)
~Susan
I went out in the yard to see if there was ant Hannah damagr, nothing but hurricane lilies are coming up.
Leaving town until sept. 30.
