How do I connect computers?

Hi all,
I just bought another computer. Would like to connect them together so both can be online at the same time without having to pay for another phone line and ISP. I have been told that this is possible but don't have the information or experience to do it. Some sort of home networking device I am told. Does anyone know what I should do? I have a HP with windows 2000 and an Acer with windows 98, they are set up in the same room. Is this a difficult task, or can I do it myself without getting me into deep trouble as I sometimes do? Any help would be a greatly appreciated.
