Had to finally get one of these when I saw it today at Wal-Mart. Don't know the proper name. I have always loved these colorful ones.
New one for me
I got one just like it at Lowes. They were clearancing them out for $.50 each because they had done blooming and were looking a little ragged, also it was late fall and they were getting rid of all of the greenhouse plants. It is now sporting 5 nice pups! I am proud of my little bargain! I wish I had a proper name for it but for that price it ceased to have much importance.
OMG! 50 cents! You lucky duck * green with envy*
Yeah I know. I felt very lucky that day. I cruise through the dying plants every time I go to town. Most of the time they are beyond bringing home to save, but sometimes as you go over the clearance weeds, you find a treasure.
I have "Tangerine", too! Yours is very nice; it must be happy where it is. Mine isn't quite as large, but it still has that pretty color.
Melanie
I think the pink one could be Neoregelia 'Nuance'? Kinda, sorta looks like it.
Hey, where do I get N. 'Tangerine'? I feel left out!
You know when I suggested on the other thread you order from Michaels, I didn't realize that you were in Australia! There are 2 very good bromeliad sellers here in Florida. One is Tropiflora, in Sarasota, the other is Michaels in Venice. They have great plants, most at reasonable prices. But I am also lucky (as are many FL cities) that we have a very actice local Bromeliad Society that comes to the plant shows in Spring and sells plants. I have collected many fine specimens from them.
Unfortunately, there is no local bromeliad society here, and the closest one is about 3-4 hours drive. There are lots of collectors in an area of about 200kms, and some are in a society, others not. I have been out to a couple of home nurseries, but its a real challenge to get to some of them, and even harder getting the Bromeliad hoarders to part with some plants! LOL (see link)http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/839497/
Most of the bromeliad growers here, sell on Ebay and through ,mail order, but they are quite dear, and you only get a small pup that takes forever to get anywhere (sometimes)
There is a local orchid nursery that sells Broms, cheap when they are potted and you don't have to pay postage! They don't get a real lot of variety though, but I have heard they will source plants if asked, so maybe thats an avenue to go down?
My bromeliad crazy friend and I are planning to do a road trip, and we have been locating Bromeliad growers via the internet, so oneday, we will take the VAN, and go for a weeks drive! Hopefully in the not to distant future. Although with the economy, it's not so easy to part with money!
I wouldn't mind sending you some, but I was under the impression Australia was very strict about plants coming into the country.
Melanie
They are. A friend of mine in Queensland area says that they are unable to even more plants from one area of Australia to another in certain cases so yes, they are very strict.
Yes, that is the case. We here in N.S.W cannot send plants to Tasmania (which makes sense because it's an Island) or Western Australia, which makes no sense, because it's attached anyway! I think its because there is so much plant/food production that could be ruined if alien bugs/disease got in. Bummer for me!
My plant has coloured up some more, and is about to flower. Does it still look like yours do you think?
I had to bring mine into the house for the winter. It is not getting much light and is fading a bit. I may have to invest in some plant lights. Everything is losing a bit of color.
Yours is beautiful!
