Home Made Sea Salt

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Kawonkamish(Greetings) Everyone,

Here's how to make your own sea salt.

Boiling Method

Need:
1 gallon of surface sea water
4 sheets of cheese cloth
1 stainless steel pot

From the surface, collect 1 gallon of sea water and filter it through four thicknesses of cheese cloth. Boil in a stainless steel pot for approximately 2 1/2 - 3 hours. Remove from the flame when salt is only slightly moist. 1 gallon sea water = approx. 4 oz sea salt.

Sun Method

Need:
1 gallon of surface sea water
4 sheets of cheese cloth
1 stainless steel pot
1 large shallow stainless steel baking sheet
Sheet of fine mesh(plastic window screen would work)
5 dry, warm, sunny days

In the morning pour sea water into a stainless steel pot and bring to a boil*. Cover and boil sea water for 2 minutes; remove from heat.

Pour 1 quart into a shallow stainless steel baking sheet, cover with mesh and leave in the sun 24 hours. The next day add 1 quart to the pan and let sit 24 hours. Third day add another 1 quart of sea water to the pan, again let it sit 24 hours. On the fourth day add the remaining quart of sea water to the pan; let sit 24 hours. Now leave the pan out for an additional 24 hours. On the afternoon of the sixth day you should be left with a approx. 4 oz of sea salt.

* Boiling ensures killing off of bacteria.
