I am so glad someone started a thread for events! You did say your list was a sampling . . . do you mind if we add to it?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thank you, Keyring! I never would have known about the show in HOuston on October 4-5 and now I will go for sure!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

How about this one, Gail? I won't be able to go, though . . .

Lone Star African Violet Convention and Show
October 30 - November 1, 2008 Wichita Falls, TX

Then there is this one a few weeks prior to Wichita Falls, but again . . . I've already said I would go to the 2008 Lone Star Gourd Festival, which is being held that same weekend in Fredericksburg.

First Austin African Violet Society
Annual Fall Display and Sale
October 18 – 19, 2008.
Hours 10:00 am – 4:30 pm on Saturday Oct. 18th
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm Sunday Oct. 19th.

I'm hoping to go to the one in Nashville. Seems like everytime I make plans to go to a Gessie show, something happens that I can't, but we'll see. I'd like to enter something in the show, too, but don't know that I have anything impressive enough to even take. LOL

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Nichole, Wichita is a 9 or 10 drive for me..........and I want to go to a Gesneriad show this time. The one in Wichita will be a great state convention. I went to the Austin AVSA last year.......broke my neck to get there and I was kinda disappointed. Don't worry about how many I bought............lots but at their AVSA convention they had very few gesneriads other than AFrican Violets.

That Kohleria Green Goblin is absolutely amazing!! I'd go to a show just to see beauties like that in person! The Sacramento show is the closest to me though and that would be 12 hours of driving ... nice to think about though. ^_^

I love the Green Goblin... Put that one on my want list... Went to sleep and here I am up as I can't sleep and this is even with drugs...

I'm still up..... I wonder how bad this tropical storm is going to be. .... ....

The trick to growing kohlerias like that is to grow them from cuttings - then they'll bloom while compact-looking.

(That assumes you can bloom them. I never seem to manage - I find buds and next thing I know, I've forgotten to water them and *poof*!)

Ellerbe, NC(Zone 8a)

I've got one to add:

MAAVS 18th Convention
November 13-15, 2008
Fredericksburg, Virginia

http://www.maavs.org/

All the big vendors will be there; Lyons, Robs, Bluebird, and Cape Cod are always there. Some smaller vendors too, but they change from year to year.

Wishing you the best with your weather Keyring!!

Thanks for tip on growing the Kohlerias that would look like that, I will be taking the scissors to some of mine shortly!!

Ki,
How did you make out with the storm where you are? We got some winds and today is still windy and several inches of rain.. My son works up in Richmond and he said they are more concerned with the next one coming .... He works for Dominon Power and they already have them ready to work on there days off...
So If I take the tips off the top of my kohleria's and root them they do better? I can bloom them just fine but I dont like how they grow tall I would like them better like the plant in your picture...

rain rain and rain and more rain. yuck. Now I wish I'd gone into the office like a normal Saturday - the HVAC works better there than my home AC.

Thanks for the tip on Ike - I haven't been keeping up with the forecast and didn't realize that one's headed this way.

If you take Kohleria cuttings when they have buds, they will usually root without losing the buds. Nearly "instant" pot of short plants with flowers. But again, this is what people tell me - I have a really bad track record with Kohleria flowers. I'm making an effort this year and so I currently have buds on some - fingers crossed.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks Ki, as I have a couple that have tops with flowers and I am going to try this... It is what keeps me busy in the winter... Trying to root things that is....

My kohlerias bloom like yours Susan, on long lanky growth! But from what I've read recently they need more light than I have been giving them. So I'm going to cut the tops of several and get them on a light stand instead of in my west window and see what happens!!

I've got lots of rhizomes Keyring .... if you need more to work with!

I'll take 6 month so snow a year over hurricanes!! Good Luck!

Roxanne,
Are you going to the one in Frederickburg? If so what date? I was telling my husband about it and he has one more vacation day left for this year and I asked it is to take me to the show right... He said yup ^_^ So I am thinking Friday or Sat is going to be the day for us so maybe we can meet up ^_^
Hugs,
Susan

Ellerbe, NC(Zone 8a)

Yeah, I'll be there!
The sales room is open to the general public on Saturday, Nov. 15th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is open on Friday for the registered convention goers......at least that's how it's been in the past.

Yes, we can meet up. That would be so much fun!!! We can compare what goodies we get. LOL And maybe have lunch together. The vendors always bring lots of stuff that's not on their websites. You can sometimes find some real gems. Oh, now I'm getting really excited........this is going to be fun. I hope Mrs. Strep is there this year.

Roxanne,
So we will say Saturday then? Now mind you my hubby will be coming but we can tell him to hide...LOL

I went with a friend to Sarasota, FL in Sept. It was a Gesneriad show and sale. The show was really nice and I got to help the judges (that was an eye opener!). And it was really great to see how the gessies are supposed to look, ha. I wish I'd had more money to buy more plants. My friend bought almost every show plant that was for sale! There were a lot of starter plants the clubs members had started and they were reasonably priced. I'm so glad I went. Had a wonderful time. I love plants!

I'm thinking of going to D.C. in 2009. I really want to go, but I'm afraid how much $$ I'll be tempted to spend and where I'm gonna put a car load of plants!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

How much were the show plants going for, and for which ones? Do you remember what the starter plants were going for? How big (pot wise) were they? Do they sell the starter plants in 3 oz solo cups? I'm going to the Corpus show in February . . . would like to know how much to start saving!!! LOL ^_^

Syrumani,- just save all you can, you may spend more than you want! I came home with $7 in my pocket! I guess they are all different. Not all show plants are for sale. Some of the people that grow them don't want to take them home. Some are traveling other places and can't attend to a plant in a hot (cold) car. Others say that once they've been with other plants, they don't want to have to bring it home and isolate it and or risk the rest of their collection becoming sick too. Some just want to move on to something else to grow and show. I did not know how much each one cost, I think the grower sets the price they want...they were very reasonable I thought. A trailer went for $6. A smithianthia for $8, some were 10 or 12 dollars. The starter plants were from $1 (just a few of these) on up....mostly about 3-4 dollars, but many at this price were just recently rooted cuttings. The bigger or special plants were $5 and 7 and up. I did get a couple that died, as I found out too late they hardly had any roots, they were tip cuttings. Some were in solo cups and some in pots. It was two clubs that were having the plants for the show, so it was just members like us growing some extra plants. You should get in touch with a contact person and ask questions, you will get more specific info. I think the good thing is there is an assortment of different plants you won't be able to purchase other places. And the info I got was invaluable..as gessies are new to me.

RainGazer, - The judging at Sarasota was very critical. One plant had a stake to hold it up. It was taller than the plant, it was the wrong color, the ties were too noticable and too big and the stake should have been closer to the stem. Beautiful plant, but they took off a lot of points for all that. Another plant had perlite showing. It should have been covered with just peat or moss. A plant in a terranium lost points because it had a plastic deli top...not sure what would have been acceptible in place of that, I wasn't with that judge. Make sure all the spent leaves and flowers are off the plant. I felt bad for the plants! ha. But I learned a lot. I learned I'll be afraid to enter a plant for show, ha, mine are all the things done wrong!
