Hope nobody minds if I start an OT thread for September, but I do have a few blooms, and would like to share . . .
This is a Simba marigold I also grew last year . . . I hope to actually save seeds from it this year, since I didn't last year, and these were the last of the purchased seed packet . . . I haven't seen them listed on the T&M site this year.
OT - September Outside Beauties
Syru, lovely flowers. I had never seen that marigold. It is so beautiful!
I just love that cassia. And..........I am very impressed that you can grow gazanias in this heat. Good for you!
Great plants, Syrumani. Very pretty!
Oooh, pretty Marigold and I LOVE that Senna/Cassia! I have one that a neighbor gave me a cutting of. I transplanted it in early summer to a spot in the backyard that gets more sun. It has gotten pretty big but it doesn't bloom until the fall. It is so beautiful when it is full of those yellow blooms! Mine has much smaller leaves than yours so mine isn't the alata but I don't know which one it is. I will have to remember to take a picture of it when it is blooming and maybe try to get an ID.
I found this pretty Hibiscus in a pot hiding in the corner of the backyard. I didn't even realize this one was still alive, it was covered with sweet potato vines that have run amok in the backyard! Something is eating the sweet potato vines as you can see by the leaves in the background of this pic but whatever it is doesn't seem to be bothering the Hibiscus! The little orange flowers in the background are Crossandra.
Thanks, everybody!
Oh, I like that hibiscus! Very pretty!
wow, I bet that hibiscus and your marigold would be great friends in the same bed!
Oh what gorgeous pictures! I should do so much in my yard, but I'm either too lazy or too absorbed with my houseplants to care. LOL Those Hoyas are fabulous, Gail! I've got a few blooming, too. Let me find the pics and I'll post them!
I will come back and see yours, Rain..............gotta go unload the dishwasher, etc.........
Woo hoo ... look at you ladies growing the hoya's! Love it! I need to check and see what blooms I have on mine.
Gail, I LOVE that first pic of yours with the dark pink flower! I sure hope that's pink silver because I think I got one of them from you but mine hasn't bloomed yet!
Amy: Yes, that is nectar ... it won't hurt your son to taste it. I think it was my kentiana that I just had to try it because I read on the hoya thread where someone had done so. Mine did have a slight sweet taste!
My krinkle 8 blooms look just like Gail's plant ... I love that darker pink of yours Amy! Aren't hoyas just the coolest plants! I am hoping to get blooms before long on some of mine that have never bloomed! Especially that H. imperialis that Gail posted photo's of a couple of weeks ago! That flower was just so big and so awesome!
I really need to go out and start taking plants out of trees and off the pool deck and securing for the next Tropical Storm "Hanna" which is supposed to skirt the coast tomorrow! Last I heard we could have winds of between 50-85 mph but luckily only a couple of inches of rain. Then we will be watching and waiting to see what "Ike" and "Josephine" are going to do! I just love Hurricane season .... NOT!
Wow! Amy and Lin, those are beautiful flowers and plants. Your plants, Lin, are giant in size..........Sometime in the next few weeks, I am going to root as many cuttings as I can from the Imperialis for friends.
I want to find some that are fragrant. Last year I took my 'smell good' ones to a friend who has a nursery. She wanted to propagate them. I said ok but when I went to pick them up, she had a table of what she had propagated from the two plants but the baskets she let die.........but I do know that we are lucky to get a lot of hoyas from Angel Exotica and I can find some good 'smelling' ones.................
Lin, that picture is Pink Silver.............with all the blooms..........
My blooms on Krinkle 8 are a light pink.........
My krinkle 8 are light pink in color too. I really love this one you posted with the vivid dark pink: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5502681 You said you think that is the pink silver? Can you post a picture of the foliage on that one so I can compare it to one of my noids?
Hmmm, well maybe I'm wrong about that being Krinkle 8. I said that from memory, so I'll go out and check to see if that's what it's labeled as.
Lin, your Hoyas are gorgeous! And HUGE! I don't have any that are anywhere near that big! How do you grow them so big and still take cuttings to share with people?
LOL, Amy ... The H. compacta came from Kimskreations ... it was already big, so that was Kim's doing! The ds-70 I bought as one of those small EA baskets a few years ago and started feeding it with Eleanor's VF-11 and it has just really taken off. I have H. brevialata that was a small EA plant that has taken off too and is really growing!
Oh, did y'all know that MarkRoy from the Hoya forum has put the Stemma Journal on-line? It's really a great publication! http://www.stemmajournal.com/
Amy: I really want to know what this one of yours is: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5502766 I don't think it's krinkle 8, at least it doesn't look like mine which has a lighter pink bloom. Whatever one that is in your photo it sure is gorgeous!
Here's my krinkle 8
Amy, that foliage is not Krinkle 8 ...............my dimpling is very very pronounced.
The marigold that started this thread is just to awesome, love it!!
Lin your hibiscus is so pretty, I hear there are hardy ones that possibly could live here in Idaho, I should look into it as I love the blooms!
Gorgeous hoyas Gail, so cool to see them growing outside hanging from trees!! Your Rose of Sharon plant is a great get well gift!!
Amy when I got the ID for the Crinkle 8 Carol on the hoya forum stressed that they were "clones" of Crinkle 8, most likely because of their source (unlabeled grocery store find) So I'm thinking the "cloning" could mean just about anything with these particular plants we have!!
Mine didn't bloom as pink as yours, you scored with that bloom!
~Brenda
I know she scored, Brenda, cause I really like the dark ones best. I am glad to know about this "cloning" thing.
Yes Gail, the less pronounced dimpling is another reason they were Id'd as clones! I'm not sure exactly what a clone is but obviously you don't get as true a plant .... but they are still pretty I think!
Here is a shot of the first bloom from mine in July, you can see the similarity's to your true Crinkle 8 blooms.
~Brenda
By the way Amy tell your son I have tasted that nectar! LOL Couldn't resist, it is just a very sweet taste to the tongue.
Gail if you like dark blooms then you love the colors in this Hoya Kerrii bloom. And the best part was it lasted nearly a full month looking just as pretty!!
No wonder these hoyas are nicknamed Wax Plant! The blooms are so gorgeous they look fake and the older cultivators have blooms that last forever!
