What causes this.......

Conroe, TX

We have a little Sebright roo, o.k. he is not laced well and has a straight comb but we love him anyway. In the picture he is with one of our Blue Cochin hens. He is the sweetest little thing, a little over a year old.
My question is....lately he sits around sort of puffed up and looks sad. His comb and waddles for a while looked pale and off and on look paler than at other times. He eats normally. He has always loved food and eats like he usually did. He just sits a lot sort of puffed with his head pulled back against his shoulders. It is almost like he is depressed. Could there be something wrong and what could it be? I worry about him.

My first guess would be the weather... I hope there is nothing more wrong with him, but as he seems to be progressing through whatever it is, hopefully he will be fine. Wish I knew more.

love your cochin too, they are both lovely!

i htink he has a cold or something. check his waddles for a high temp [tepid bath to birng it down] look closely at his eyes and nose...

somewhere i may have a link for symptoms...
here: http://archive.msstate.edu/dept/poultry/diagext.htm

meanwhile, throw a bunch of minced garlic out for him to eat. if he doesn't like it, put it in their water with ACV.... boositng his immune system can help him get well...

Tamara, what is ACV?

Apple Cider Vinegar--the unfiltered kind. Bragg's is a common brand. You can find it at health food stores.

Right, tf?

I LOVE PETS FROM A TO Z I am a rescuer so here I am with a chicken that a lady brought through pneumonia however she could not keep her because it has a cough from the sickness. She did not want it killed, but could not have it with her other chicken. So here she is with me, she is so very sweet but when she coughs I feel so bad. I came to this group because I am hoping that some one can me in put as how to help her. It seems to me that there should be a herb that would help her with the bronchitis problem. As you can see from her picture how sweet she is. I was told that she could give it too other chickens

Did you get an actual diagnosis? Somethings they can get over, some will leave them with symptoms but are not contagious, some they can recover from but continue to give to other chickens.

The lady that gave her to me took her to the Vet and he put her on antibiotics which she got over, and was left with her cough, she told me that the hen could not be around other chickens, I don't have any but her. Other than that I don't know more info.

Hmmm--Anyone know what it could be?

Thanks TF, we will try the garlic and ACV.
I have been giving him cayanne pepper in water, he loves it.
He is my little speckle roo and he is a special little bird. He has already survived fowl pox which he had as a little chick. The Blue Cochin in the picture with him also had fowl pox and lost one eye.
I have checked his waddles and comb but they always seem cool to the touch not very warm.
I haven't noticed any other symptoms and he has acted this way for quite a while now.

hi marcia, you might ask the herbalist at this forum...

but i suspect the ACV, garlic, and some kind of demulcent like slippery elm. depending on how raspy her lungs sound...

Consider coccidiosis and worms. Both are quite common and easy to treat. I would use sulmet or ivermectin, respectively.

For the hen with the cough, I would guess that she needed to be on the antibiotic longer or it was due to a virus. Many vets do not prescribe antibiotics for as long as they are needed for birds. In both cases I would suggest contacting Peter Brown, the Chicken Doctor at www. firststatevetsupply. com (remove spaces).
