Fresh fig - oh, my!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

I picked our first fig from our brown turkey fig tree (received from Frostweed at the CS Spring RU in 2007) and shared it with DH. Oh, my!!! The flavor is to die for!

I was told by a fruit expert that brown turkeys were great for canning, but not preferred for fresh eating. I almost dug the tree up, but first I asked about it here on DG and I was assured that they were great fresh, so I persevered. Am I glad I did!!! And I'll let the fruit "expert" know, too!!!

I was a disadvantaged soul that hadn't eaten a fresh fig until last year, and didn't know how good they were. Fig Newtons were as close as I got...

Thanks, Frostweed!!!!!!

Ceejay,

How are you and your sweet DH?

I am not a fig eater but tried one of those 7 yrs ago, oh my I love them. My neighbors tree did not do good this year. :o( Tell the fruit expert I also disagree.

We did make preserves with Jello and oh my how great. I need a tree of my own. :o) Would love some fresh and preserves. DH preferred the preserves.

I want some figs.... :o(

Blessings,

I can remember as a kid sitting under our fig tree and eating until I was full on the sweet brown/green fruit! The bush was almost as tall as the house and was.

We also have a Brown Turkey, that's a good sized tree. We had two big harvests and more figs than we eat, can and give away. Wildlife sure love them. Anyway if you would like a jam recipe we have one that we really like.

Hi Sandy and Sheila! You are so lucky you got to grow up with them. I grew up in the north, but got here as fast as I could. And firmly planted, too.

Siggy, my tree is still little - about 8 or 9 feet, but I'm hoping to get enough fresh figs this year to make me sick. :-D However, next year I might (hope) I'll need that recipe, so I'd very much like to have yours. Thanks!

ceejay,

I did not grow up here. Got here 30 yrs ago this year. But ever since I
had the courage to taste them the first time I am hooked. My neighbors tree did not have a good year this yr. :o( I was looking forward to them.
But I did get here as fast as I could too. I took cuttings and they rooted but accidentally ran over the pot and killed them. I will do some more come spring. Or is there still time now?

Need to have mt own to eat enough to get sick on. :O)
