My First Chickiez!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I had to run to the feed store for fear I was going to adopt another dog from some pics a DG friend was sending me.. LOL
I got these 4 darling RIRs and love them soooo much!
I found the bird cage in the dumpster the other day, so that was a temporary shelter till I get something built in the garden area... I've been bitten by another bug... I love my babiez sooooo much!
One of them, (the pale one) is so funny.. it will run to me when I talk to it. They have only been here one day and they follow me around already!

Hey ZZ--I'm in Lodi too! Did you get them at Robinson's?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Awww...totally adorable! Congrats on your new babies!! Keep those pics coming!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Catscan... I got them at the one on Victor Rd.. I can't remember the name for the life of me!

Lodi, United States

Yep--that is Robinson's. I saw the RIR there last week. You lucky dog!

I wanna go back and get the lil black Sultans.. and a couple of some other kinds.. those teeny tiny black ones... I will have to have Silkies too someday.. but I HAVE to keep this under control.. they can't cause problems with residents or I will be hearing a LOT of feedback.. and may not be able to keep them. (I am out of the City limits though)

My head is swimming trying to figure out how to build a coop... This is more work than I thought.. LOL

I saw the Sultans!--earlier they had Americanas and Silkies. They had Austalorps last week too--are those the black ones? Australorps are very quiet:0)

Quiet? SOLD! LOL I need a few more..

ZZ. I am known as the CF. Based in Africa, I exchange things such as TEETH for chickens. Another of my tasks is to rehome roos, adopt out abused hens, and dust people with Chicken Fever till they become "chicken heads"!

Catscan has some wonderful quiet roos with a very nice temperament. As CF, I am quite well acquainted with her chicken's bloodlines. You would not be disappointed. You likely have all pullets in your RIRs, and will need a roo anyhow. Nobody near Lodi has healthier birds, I guarantee!

As far as coops go, do some research in this wonderful place they call Dave's Garden. Full of all kinds of ideas, so many things you can build for almost free. Why, I even found a poor fellow in Texas who built a portable Chicken Wheel out of discarded trampoline frames.

Now your son needs a good, well behaved roo. And Catscan's are young enough to form a bond with him. So go get you a big black rooster.

A Warm Welcome to you,

Oh Joyce, your son is so cute. I love your babies too! I have always wanted chickens, the fancy ones with the head mops. When I was a child I had a rooster that hatched in our dining room from a science project my sister did. I loved that rooster. He would follow me all over. When I went away to school, my parents gave him to a farm. I still remember how great he was, except at 6 AM when he would go nuts. LOL

I bet you do a great job on a coop for them. You are so handy with stuff like that.

oh welcome and nice pretty birds you have and a handsome son.

Thank you Chicken Fairy! What a wonderful welcome to start my day with! I suspect I was dusted with Chicken Fever years ago. I was a caretaker for a horse ranch and I raised 15 Aracanna? (spelling) chickens and loved them dearly. I had all colors of eggs.. blue, pale green, and pale pink.
One day when I was knocking bales of hay off the top of the stack in the barn, a bale fell on one of my hens and broke her leg. I cried and cried and cried. I caught her and put popsickle sticks and taped her leg to the "splint" and put her in a cage for a couple of weeks. She healed just fine!!! She didn't even limp.
A few months later, I had to get rid of all my chickens cause of the race horse owners who objected to having chickens on a horse farm... All my chickens were given to someone who raised chickens and promised to give them a good home. So now I am thrilled that I get to have chickens again! (also thrilled that my DS loves them as much as I do)

I'm excited to meet Catscan.. I'm lucky to have her in the same town!

Good morning Kell!!! I intend to get a couple of those "mop head" chickens too. LOL I've always wanted them.. I was looking online and fell in love with those "splash" chickens.. sooo cute!

I haven't built a coop yet, remember, all my projects are done solo... and it's expensive! I'm no where near ready to build.. still in the planning stage... but I did talk to the land owner and he is all for it. He said "I thought you were gonna get at least 25" I was trying to contain my excitement... not even caring if he was just being sarcastic.. I'm sure he knows me well enough to know better than to say something like that.. LOL I take it as permission to get at least 40, wouldn't you? LOL

Oh wow! Look at those luvs2garden2000!!! How beautiful they are!

Thank you Thank you Everyone for starting my day with a HUGE smile!

I would LOVE a big black Roo CF, but I'm sure you already know that!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

You fit right in for sure, at least 25 does mean 40 or more. I have around 300. My daughter asked me yesterday how many I have and I said I dont know you want to go count them. NOPE. My the CF bless you in abundance. I know she has me.

Just think Joyce, now you will have tomatoes and eggs to share with your neighbors. You are going to have such fun!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Fat chance I will share! LOL

Oh a TOP HAT??!! How cute is THAT!!

What a super darling grandaughter.. but I was a little distracted.. please forgive me!

It's 2:40 and I can't pull myself away from the babiez long enough to come in and eat lunch.... They were sleeping on my foot..

Do the Roo's get tail feathers early? 2 of them are getting tail feathers..

Lodi, United States

Hi ZZ--generally roos tend to get their tail feathers later. But it is somewhat breeds specific. My Barnevelder and Marans roos got their tail feathers much later. They look kind of square and stubby compared to the pullets. It is at about 4-6 months that they start to get their long sickle feathers.

I have some lovely Barnevelder and a Marans roos as well as my big black Jersey Giant/Black Australorp roos--you have just to say the word!

Gao, Mali

Well Done, you two.
