Exciting experience for me! The little koi babies were eating out of my hand for a few minutes today. I have been feeding them a handful of the tetra pond food soft sticks so they know that it is food. Just to see what would happen I put a few pieces in my hand under the water and soon had a swarm of babies coming to check it out. They are surpisingly strong for being so small (maybe an inch). They soon lost interest though. I have tried the tetra koi sticks and also Hikari Staple mini pellets. No one seems very impressed with either one. The adults never show themselves and the babies eat it just because they eat everything. What kind of food do yours seem to really like? Also, the string algea really annoys me but have not done much to eradicate it as that is probably what everyone is surviving on. If I take steps to get rid of the string algea will the babies and adults have enough to eat?
What to feed the fish?
Mine love chopped up zuchinni!
I've crushed up pellets for the babies or use flakes.
Kathi , now that's a new way to get rid of zucchini , ^_^
Green peas and cheerios!
Yes, they really consider it a treat. My DH also throws in some dog food every once in a while.
I've started with peas and shrimp with all my fish. My koi love me now:)
frozen shrimp chopped up? Seasoned with or without the garlic??? LOL! I heard koi love garlic. . .
No garlic yet, will have to try it and see what happens:) It is funny to watch the little goldfish grab a big chunk of shrimp. They turn into little sharks, carrying around pieces bigger then their heads.... LOL
