What is this?

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

What is this? I'm pretty sure it's not digitalis, though it looks much the same. I'm not referring to the variegated "weed". I know what that demon is. I'm wondering about the plant with the huge leaves.

and this is what it looks like at the base.

Like that, but have no clue as to what it is. What to Know...

Chimacum, WA

Might be Clary sage. It has huge leaves that look very much like that. also the base looks much like that.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Don't know where it would have come from, but that would sure be nice!!

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

It sure looks like foxglove to me.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Patricia - that's the most likely, but it's bigger than any foxglove I've had (or seen, for that matter) - and I live in foxglove country. Only time will tell.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Kathy - it could be a giant foxglove (some of mine hit 8' with oar sized leaves) - the leaves/colour sure look that way. Salvia Argentea has the larger leaves typically are more silver, on both sides.

Oooh, that is a pretty foxglove. Love it.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Pretty picture, Kate. I love the salvias.

Well, it sounds like we all think it's foxglove. Guess I'll have to leave it there (don't know how I'll rip out the Aegopodium and still leave it there, but I'll try) so we can see if that's what I have.

Thanks, all.

I think it takes foxglove 2 years to bloom,so that may very be a seedling.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

You're right, Ned. I have seedlings everywhere in the yard. My microclimate is perfect for them. Sadly, though, they don't seem to seed in the bed I want them in, so I end up moving them all in the fall. ^_^

This one is much bigger, though, and the leaves kind of droop, unlike the others . . .

Robert (balvenie) gave me a yellow foxglove last month. All I have is pink, so I'm looking forward to a little variety. And then Bernadette (beahive) send me a few chocolate foxglove seed. That has got to be something to look at!!

Check out Toad flax in the plantfiles. I didn't yet, but it might be. Here in Eastern Washington it is a noxious weed.

Jeanette

Couldn't find the one we have in plantfiles. Sorry. Jeanette

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Hi, Jnette -

Do you mean to identify the big-leafed seedling? The toadflax I'm seeing (linaria vulgaris) doesn't appear to have a big leaf. Still looking for more pictures.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yes, the big leafed one. Isn't that the one you meant? Sorry if I got the wrong one. If it is the one you meant I couldn't find the one I was looking for in the plantfiles.

Jeanette

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

That's the right one. I was confused because when I look for toadflax (this is a picture from Oregon State Extension Services), the plant I see doesn't appear to have the big leaves . . .

Are you thinking of a different plant, maybe?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yup, you're right. That wasn't it. It looks more like the wild foxglove or there is one more that it might be, in fact I might have one in my field that I haven;t pulled up. It has a tall poker type bloom, yellow. I'll bet you have those over there and probably know which one I mean.

Have these plants bloomed? What does it look like?

Jeanette

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Jnette, Sounds like you are talking about mullen? Leaves more like lambsear?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Only the big leaves and the poker bloom is about 6 feet tall???

Jeanette

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

You know - it's a little like mullein, except that that the leaves seem looser and more upright than mullein. However, my SIL, who is from Missouri, has mullein in her yard and I can see how a stray seed might have gotten into my bed from some other plant she gave me. It is kind of furry . . .

Such a mystery - and I really do appreciate the interest you guys are showing in helping me figure this out. I'll keep an eye out.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Let me know if you find out for sure. LOL, Jeanette

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I'll keep an eye on it and update this thread. It'd sure be nice if something happened before fall.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Mullien is a definate gray green and softly fuzzy. It wasn't your plant I meant katie59, Jnette was talking about a plant in her field and that sounded like mullien.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Very interesting. Jeanette

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

I have a ton of foxglove. Mine are all different sizes. They are biennial and it will bloom next spring. I have had flower spikes up to 7 feet tall on some of mine. They are wonderful and the hummers love them!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I got one from you and it bloomed this year, Rach. Yes, I have seedlings all over the garden and usually move them in the fall into the one spot where I want tall foxglove. This one is just so much bigger than any of the others I have. Don't know why, because it's having to compete with the Bishop's Weed.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I have a neighbor who had foxglove like yours katie. Big dark green leaves and huge. The green leaves went up at least 3' very thickly. At first I told her is wasn't foxglove. This year I had a couple of my plants do that also. Don't know why but they are different.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Please want to see a pic.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I try to get a picture.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

They must have drank the milk with the hormones in it :0) Or maybe they found the perfect little micro climate or water, compost and great dirt!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I have several huge digitalis that I've seen around the yard - I think this year in my yard has just been perfect for them. And this one is even bigger. Yeow!!
