When I first spotted him in the water among the tree trunks, I thought he was a great blue. He flew up and couldn't figure out where to land, so he landed sideways on this tree trunk like a woodpecker or a warbler! That was when I saw the spotted back that confused me. He then flew up onto another branch and I'll share those pics too. There was a little blue nearby and a tricolored that were much smaller than this one.
CLOSED: what kind of heron
Black-crowned Night Heron, juvenile. Yellow-crowned juv is much less spotted on the back.

That explains a lot because when I saw the pictures of him in the tree, I thought he looked most like the juv yellow-crowned ones that I've seen, but I didn't remember that spotted back.
Here's another question for you. I thought this was a Tricolored because of the white neck, but the rest of it looks like a Green heron. Can you tell which one is it?
Green Heron
Yep, Green Heron.

Thank you Donna and Resin!
