Rosemary propagation?

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I posted this in Propagation forum, but have yet to get an answer, so thought I might have more luck here.

How long should it take for a Rosemary cutting to root, if it's going to? I had a rosemary branch a friend gave me that I decided to try to root. I cut the bottom tip off, removed the lower leaves, put rooting hormone on it and it seems to be doing well. I got it the Friday before last and it's still green and supple. I want to give it back to my friend as a plant. He's going through a divorce and selling the house, but seems to really like the plant. I thought that if I could root it I could give it back to him as a sign; something of the old in new ground. So, I want to give it to him as soon as possible, but I also want to make sure it's going to survive.

zhinu, I have found it takes 4-6 weeks to get good root growth on rosemary starts. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks, finally got an answer on the other thread and they gave me about the same answer.

I just break bits off, use the leaves in cooking then put the stalks in a glass of water in a sunny windowsill and have roots within a week . No hormone stuff just plain old tap water.

Good information for future reference.

Anyone have any success with WSing Rosemary or Thyme? I need to come up with about 75 thyme and rosemary seedlings for a volunteer project later this spring.

Froggy, if it is a volunteer project, check with any local nurseries/greenhouses in your area. Very often, they are quite happy to donate plants for a good cause. If that fails, check Possum Creek Herbs in Soddy Daisy, TN for very lovely plants at an extremely reasonable price.

Thanks Herbalbetty. I'll check the Possum Creek website. It's a little early to check the local nurseries right now, but I'll check them next month.

Froggy--Thyme is really easy to winter germinate.
