I'm so excited!

Okay, I know I should've jumped in here sooner. I'm a brug newbie, and this is my first post on this forum. But, I'm really excited, so now seems to be the time. I just found my very first buds!

I have 10 brugs, all started from cuttings since the end of last October. None have ever bloomed. Most haven't Y'ed since they were cut. Most are less than 2 feet tall. So, I really wasn't expecting any blooms this year.

It's Pink Favorite that has the buds... not 1... not 2... but 3 of them. It's only about 15 inches tall! I was really shocked to find the buds. Is it NORMAL for such small brugs to bloom? Yes, it does have a Y, but it's such a little thing.

Photos coming in a few days--with a HUGE smile.

Welcome to the Brug forum and congratulations on the buds, pbtxlady. If the cuttings came from above the "Y" of the mother plant, it will continue to grow and bloom as if it had never left the mother plant. On the other hand, if the cuttings come from below the "Y", they will first have to grow to a certain height (for that cultivar) and "Y" before blooming.

It's always fun to see such small plants produce such large blooms. I have one that has been doing that since it was about 8" high at the beginning of summer.

Betty i have been growing them for years and i never knew that. Thanks for sharing that info.

Thanks for the welcome, ladies.

Betty, how would you know? I mean, I have half a dozen cuttings here that didn't come with a Y. I don't know how to tell if they came from below a Y or above. Is there any way to tell? Or do I just need to be patient? I can do patient, but it's not nearly as much fun. :)

I do have some others that are bigger and came with Y's, and I really hope they will bloom when it cools off and our "second growing season" starts up. Two are hybrids from Ted (TARogers) from his own hybridization program, so they're not named. I can't wait to see what Ted turned out.

To tell if your cutting came from above or below the "Y", you need to take a look at the leaves where they attach to the petiole. The sides of the leaves are even when the leaves are from below the "Y". When the leaves come from above the "Y", the leaf sides that attach it to the petiole are uneven. Go to my post on this thread. I have included a link there. Go to that link and scroll down to leaves.

It would be much easier if I just give you the link directly, but it's one we are not supposed to mention because of previous problems caused by members some time ago. I don't want to push my luck.

Oh, you know, I read that thread a little while back, and looked at the pictures. Can't believe I didn't remember. Thanks for reminding me.

Hello pbtxtlady,
Congrats on the buds. Sounds like you’ve got a good burg addiction going, so exciting, waiting for the blooms to open.
