This is a conteniuation of Another Hot Spell #2.
We came from here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/888373/#new
Is that name better?
What weird weather we're having
Good choice!!
Sorry Red I had to pass it off to a more competent party................"she done good!"
I usually do miss exits - thanks for the directions!
I ordered queen anne's lace seeds and they arrived today but now i understand that in many places this is an invasive weed. Is that true here in the northwest?
I don't know that I'd call it invasive, but it does pretty well here in some places.
Mauryhillfarm was just saying that she has it all around. I don't see any in my neighborhood.
Portland1, especially on talkative threads I'm missed the link for the new room for hours. It'll be up 15 posts or so and there will be three of us wondering where everyone went. So I try to "leave breadcrumbs" when I notice someone is posting on a closed thread.
Queens Anne's Lace is invasive up here, but that's no reason not to grow it. If I knew you wanted some seeds I could have gotten you some. We have fields of it around here.
I don't know abotu the Portland area, or if there are different types we do have a variety that is in every empty lot around up here....did you read the article yesterday in the "Todays Articles" I think it was called don't kill that weed or something similar......it was talking about how you could tell soil condition and all kind of things just by the type of weed (flowers, depending on your definition....I call them flowers) growing in an area. It was very interesting.
I don't know if the Queen Ann's Lace is considered invasive, in the sense of taking over areas at the expense of the native vegetation. It does grow quite well and is prolific in disturbed areas, such as the field I live in. However, it is more easily pulled out of unwanted locations in my garden beds than other weeds I have, and it seems to be controllable by frequent mowing. I'd rather have QAL than the false dandelion that is spreading far more rapidly and which we haven't managed to mow down frequently enough. The thing to know about it is if it spreads into other areas and out-compete's the native vegetation. I don't have the answer to that, but I'm sure it could be found on line. I don't know how to create links or I'd look it up and put one in.
Holly-creating links is pretty easy.Just find a webpage you want to link to,do a right click on the address bar, select copy, then go to the reply you're making & paste it there. It shows up as a hyperlink when you hit post.

I would sure much rather have the QAL than Ivy or the bind weed!!!
The false dandelions are taking over my yard too...but then the dirts so hard I can't get new grass to grow... I wish I could just rip it all out and put in raised beds, but I rent.
I agree, good choice on the name.
It was hot here today, but we went to the coast, so it was 20 deg cooler. Clear and 70 on the coast is a really good day!
I like QAL too, don't have it growing in my yard, but it is in the fields around us, really pretty.
Has been cloudy and on the cool side here. I love the Queen Annes Lace...and I Do use it in my flower arrangements....a little messy but I think it is pretty.
Who's got QAL. Yep its on the invasive noxious weed list, but I love QAL, too. Love to get some for my garden.
Back to the thread at hand. So I see that Sunday and Monday are forcast to be nice. They better be. I started using my son's wading pool, which he does not wade in for collecting rainwater for watering. Now its more or less full, and no need to water. Sigh.
Portland, thanks so much. I wish that were my job!! At the moment, and for the last month or two, I'm helping some of the crews out with the firefighting around here (unfortunately the cause of the nice pink and red skies). Other than that I supervise teenage youth crews out in the woods. So, I still get to go to some remote places. I'm not a photographer (still trying to figure out my camera!) just have some opportunities to try to mess with my camera and maybe get good pictures. If I take 20, I'll get one that I like. Then to add to it, I have a job at a plant place. So, when you get settled into Portland and want to get out and see more of Oregon, I'll have a lot of day hikes in mind for you!!
I love the new thread name zhinu and zhinusmom! It fits
Where did you go to on the Coast Sally? Did you get to go through Depot Bay again!!?
Sofer. Your snow is beautiful! So, it must belong there!! (not here :-p)
How often do you get your grandkids Portland. They sound like fun! and I would pass out after a day of four of them!
redchic - I have a book of hiking trails around Portland and make good use of it. I developed such a love of the mountains while doing a lot of skiing.
I am disappointed today because I had tickets to see Willie Nelson in Jacksonville on Saturday but can't go. :(
I see the grandkids every few months which was an adjustment for me because I used to live about 20 minutes from them in San Francisco. But I have a lot of kids and 2 of them have kids so no matter where I go there is family around! A daughter lives here in Portland.
Your job with the teenage youth crews sounds great - I love teenagers!
I have a new grandchild and look forward to "seeing" her but "being" with her is at age 3 months somewhat stressfull. She only likes big soft chested people. Anyone but mom is a moment of distress. I have hung in there talking to her as she rages and mom is being thankfull for my attempt to over come separation anxiety. After the last 2 weeks with her she was pretty good with me and then many others. So I get to see her in a week to reconnect and let her know grandpa is OK. 500 miles is a good distance and that way I only see her every month or so.
What a cutie! Enjoy your visit as they grow up to quickly!
It's so misrable here today. 80 degrees and 71% humidity. I wish the rain would just show up, it'll be more bearable then.
Portland, it's too bad that you don't get to go to the concert. Hopefully it's for a good reason. What are your favorite areas/trails so far. I haven't hiked around many trails or areas there, whatever was short enough that I could fit it into where I was driving to. But, there are a few that I really liked.
Sofer, Hopefully you'll get to enjoy the grandbaby soon. as you know, she'll grow out of it soon enough. And then there's the two's..........
Analog.... I agree with you completely about the forecast!!!
Or one or more of these:

My 3.5 yo boy has the firehouse, the hospital, a big jet plane, and more various stuff than you could imagine. And quite honestly, none of it is used in the way it was intended. Especially the hospital stuff. It cracks me up all the time.
Cool Rob. But Little girls like Doll houses. Little Boys know what? that is a Q.
They can go in so many directions, that its not funny. My son who is 41 has still not growed up, thinks he is. But not, still calls mama, What do I do??? poor kid just don't get it. Whats he going to do when I'm gone?
Sad thing, Make yours strong.
Zhinu.....Nero in that doll house cracks me up! Mine go places like that if they think they're being ignored.
RC....we couldn't decide which casino to go to (I had birthday stuff from both) so we had lunch in Canyonville, then went to Reedsport and up the coast to Florence and had dinner at the new casino there. Mom loved the ride, she misses the ocean like I do. And it was such a pretty day.
Soferdig...beautiful grand baby! She'll have you wrapped around her little finger in no time. That's what grandpas are for.
Hot again today, it's really windy tonight...it keeps setting off the motion lights on my deck.
Redchic.....we're going to Depot Bay in Sept. (the 20th I think) for the Salmon Bake. I'm really looking forward to that.
Sally, Nero just likes to perch; if there is something for him to perch on he will. I've wanted to get a pedestal for awhile, but cats are contentious and I figure he wouldn't use it.
redchic I like hiking around Forest Park. Sometimes the trails are more like walking but I still enjoy it. The beauty of that area is that it is so close that you can zoom out there for a few hours and then carry on with your day. The challenge I am finding here is my boots get damp and don't dry out before the next day so I am thinking about a second pair so that one pair will always be ready. Before moving to Oregon I hiked in the Eastern Sierras and it was dry enough that everything was dried by morning. I am also thinking if investing in some new camping equipment since right now a lot of stuff is on sale. Nothing is more exciting than buying a new tent! Ahhh the possibilities!
Forest Park is an interesting place, that's for sure. And very convenient that it is right in town. I have only been there a couple of times and I'm always surprised that there aren't more people there given that it's so close to everything. Yep, you definitely need either two pairs of hiking boots or a boot dryer, it just makes things sooo much easier!
now it's coming back to me Sally. I remember you telling me about the salmon bake. It sounds as if it was a great day to be at the beach!
Looking at the Forecast Discussion on the Weather, I see where the prognosticators are talking about summer resuming late next week. Humm, summer in the first week of September? That feels like today. Sigh.
Well, all I know is that I was getting strong east winds at my place this morning, which is usually one of the first signs that fall is coming around here.
I can't wait to sit and communicate house/home ideals for my GD. She and I will have long conversations about what each moment of role playing we choose. After all I never had a garage let alone a doll house. We boomers were limited in what we could have. Todays child has it all. I can't wait to be young in thought and play again. Yahooooo!
I already got to build sand castles with her and create a world of dreams on an ocean front.
We had an "October-like" system blow through here last night with wind, but no rain (at least for me). Today is cold (high is supposed to be 68, rather than the usual 73), but at least we're getting some sun. It really seems like autumn and football weather. Even the trees are getting the hint.
Soferdig I love the water.....could do without the cold and rain, but it still sounds good...especially the brandy and the fire part. Have fun!
Have fun, Steve. It was cool here today, but very nice, actually - like a nice fall day. Couldn't have asked for better, imho.
I went out to get the paper this morning and it was downright chilly! Warmed up after the sun was up and turned out to be a great day to work outside.
I have to be content to watch boat races, I get motion sickness that lasts for days, darn it! The brandy and fire sound great....hmmm, I night at the coast, watching the waves, brandy.....sounds like a plan. Maybe we'll treat ourselves after we get done with the house.
Soferdig.....love your sand art. Don't they have fantastic things for kids now? Of course there's a lot to be said about making your own things too. I remember times spent with my boys, making forts out of cardboard boxes, tight budget in those days. We had a lot of fun though and they still remember. Ahhh, the memories.

We finally got some rain today. Not a whole lot, but I didn't need to water tonight. Still on the coolish side, I don't know if it got up to 70, sure feels like fall. It's too early!!!
This is depressing..... it started to snow in the mountains today :-(( Couldn't believe it. Snow at 5000' in August! It was only 3 and a half months ago that we had the latest snow storm since they started keeping track!!! But, it could be worse. It wasn't a hurricane. But, I still want summer back, or at least fall..........
