Has anyone tried the personal insect (mosquitoes) pins /bracelets? After not having any rain for 4 months we suddenly were inundated with 5 inches in the past 2 weeks. We can't even go out in the yard without masks and covering ourselves with jackets and insect spray repellent. Kinda hard to pull weeds and garden all covered up like that. Not to mention mosquitoes buzzing in the ears, nose and mouth. I have been spraying the yard and garden, 3 acres, every time I need to go out but I would like to have an easier way to survive the outbreaks and be able to garden. I have seen these pins on the shelves but did not want to waste any expense. But if they work,I'm off to the store. I must admit it was nice to go out in the yard all spring and summer without mosquitoes. I know it is only temporary but I feel I am wasting time if I'm not in the garden.
personal insect repellers
I've never tried those, but this is what I use. You do have to reapply after awhile, but it really does work and it's less expensive (& a whole lot safer for you) than Off.
Vanilla home remedy for personal use:
8 oz water
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp. orange oil
Spray on liberally.

Stephanie....Where do I find Orange Oil in WM? We have West Nile in our area, as you know. If that works, I need to try it. I have been using the Deep Woods Off and it works great, but is expensive. The Avon SKin so Soft is nice, but doesn't work very long at all.
Thanks Stephanie, I will try that remedy. I have used off and other brands until it just starts suffocating me. I feel that my skin can't breathe.
I don't think I've seen it in WM. I usually get it at Lowe's. If they don't have it, I go to Marshall Grain down on E. Lancaster. (Always an educational trip.)
I am sure! Thanks.
I haven't personally tried this but have heard that you can spray plain old Listerene (the mouth wash)on and/or around you and you will have no mosquitoes, would be worth a try. This was an idea for use on a deck (spray the deck and voila no mosquitoes) but I think it would work anywhere. Sounds strange, but would be safe.
I can vouch that the vanilla will work. We used it in the Marina shop when painting boats to keep the bugs off the fresh paint.
Caution you must use the pure stuff.
Boy, there are some options. I appreciate all the comments. I have vanilla and listerine.
Think I will pass on the bracelets.
Thanks to all.
I have pure vanilla from Mexico will that work? I need the orange oil. I am like you all I have tried bracelets and no luck but the off and stuff gives me a headache for having that smell on so long.
I do burn citronella candles where I am gardening it does help. also one at the back door and one at the front.
I read plain garlic powder in olive oil is great for cuts and scrapes. I will try it cheaper then neosporin.

my son when he was little used to have a bad reaction to mosquitoes...the bites would swell up to blisters the size of silver dollars of course it took us taking him to the emergency room once before we knew what it was from and we were told to take B12.
take 2 a day for a week before it is mosquito time to get it built up in your system then one a day after that till season is over and it worked.
Be extremely careful using orange oil. If inhaled from spray, it remains permanently in your lungs. Frankly, I wouldn't use it for this purpose at all! We've had great luck using a Mosquito Magnet - a piece of equipment developed by the Coast Guard to control mosquitos in the Bahamas. It uses the same kind of propane gas you use in grills to generate a mist (to which is added an attractant) which attracts the mosquitoes to it, then sucks them inside a net for later disposal. The only problem is the machines are the devil to keep working.
My favorite new method to control mosquitoes when I've working outside is to hook up a box fan from Home Depot (it has to have a tripod base to keep it steady on the ground) to a long extension cord. The fan keeps me cool and blows all the bugs away.
