I got this plant when my grandmother passed away. Is it a rex begonia?
Thanks, Pam
Is this a rex begonia?
No, it is not a rex begonia but it is a rhizomatous begonia. Rexes are rhizomatous too but not all rhizomatous are rexes. Rhizomatous begonias are ones that have a creeping rhizome along the surface of the soil. Rex begonias have the original rex in their genes and generally have very colorful leaves. A lot of folks shun the rex begonia because of the following: they typically shed all their leaves in winter and are susceptible to powdery mildew in the fall.
Here is a typical rex begonia ('Mikado').
Thanks. I'm not too knowledgeable about begonias. It's a nice little plant. I'm going to try to take good care of it. That rex pic is VERY pretty.
