My first terrarium. I posted this in Tiny Gardens forum also. This was great fun to make and even earned my first ever county fair ribbon. Terrarium gardening is fascinating...I am starting another one shortly.

Wow....this would be a fun project to do with my princess and fairy obsessed niece! I am new to terrarium gardening - do you think a 6 yr old could keep something like this maintained? She is fairly responsible.
She could because they do not take much water at all. You have to trim a bit though. Just like with kids and pet care, the adult has to be in charge, but the child can take part, have fun and learn. I have terrariums that do great and then after a while, you just have to clean them out and start over. For a child, having more fairies, pretty rocks etc, maybe one plant might work well.
My DSD is a bit older, just turned 8, but here is a fairy garden she made http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6461753 . If niece s mature for her age I don't think it would be a problem at all. If she's anything like my DSD all you'll have to worry about is her drowning it.

linda i just posted somewhere else on this site about wanting to use a dome shape container for my first terranium and now here i see yours for inspiration! but i had thought i would have to plant in a shallow dish and then use the dome to put upside down over it--i am so happy to see how to do it the right way--any hints to help me start up? and do plants stay small when planted in one?
