I am getting 4 new Wakin from Tropical Fish Warehouse on Ebay. I have a new 55 gallon aquarium they will be QTing in and then they will probably stay in an indoor stock tank for the winter. I would really like to have some baby wakins so I want to keep them seperate from my mixed pond so that means a possible wakin pond in the spring:)
Here are their pics.... this one is my favorite, love at first sight.

New Wakins!
Evesta: I don't know anything about wakins. Do they interbreed with koi? How big do they get? They are beautiful and got my attention. . . Are they as sensitive health-wise as koi?
I especially like the first picture of the wakin with the red around the eyes.
They are basically a type of goldfish. Wakin means goldfish in Japanese. They will interbreed with koi and make sterile mutts. Supposedly they can get up to 18 inches long but I think more like 12-14 inches is the norm. They look very similar to koi but don't have to have the space koi need. Winter hardy and what I've read very hardy in general.
I fell in love with their little faces, and yes the eyes:) The bigger they get the cuter they get from what I've seen in pictures. They have double tails like fancies but swim more like a comet so they can compete with other pond fish. Look for torpedo bodies and long double tails. I also heared they are extremely friendly fish.
Wakins are hard to find in the US. Raingarden.us carries them(but doesn't have a great selection at the moment) and also TFWH on ebay has imports straight from Japan. They can also be calico or blue/black but those colors are very rare and expensive.
I will post more pics when I get them...
Thank for posting the pixs... they are incredible!!! so bright, and great markings!
If my pond is emptied but heron or disease again I am going to go this route. Very cute!
Very nice markings on all of them. And a new pond too, you are so lucky!
My Wakin are flying from California tonight. Should have them before 3pm tomorrow.
A little worried about putting them in the new aquarium because it has never had fish in there before so the filter isn't seeded. I did add some material and water from my other aquarium and added some cycle bacteria but I'm worried about the amonia levels getting toxic. I'm going to be gone for 2 days over the weekend and don't want to come home to dead fish.
I will do a 50% water change before I leave to be safe and keep feedings down. Wakin are as hardy as comets so I think they will be okay. My ph is high too and have been trying to get it down. 4 5'' inch fish in 55 gallons with double the filtration with the 110 aquaclear. Any other suggestions???
Wow Eve! They are beautiful,I love the double tail and the color and markings are wonderful. I have too many fish now or I would certainly be tempted to add some to my flock☺your filtration sounds more than adequate and I think your new Wakin will thrive and make beautiful ♫music♪ in the new pond☼
My wakin came today!!! They were suppose to be here originally on Tuesday (I paid on Monday for overnight shipping) and that didn't happen.... so they were shipped Tuesday, again overnight. Suppose to be here Wednesday by 3pm. Yesterday came and went while my wakin sat in Indianapolis for 24hours.
Needless to say I was panicked. Finally got a hold of somebody from Fedex that cared this morning. They called the truck it was on directly and said to make my delivery first. Got them at 11am this morning. The lady showed up and handed me the box. I was so relieved when I felt a jump!!!
They were all alive but looking pretty tough. My biggest guy has a swollen eye, it looks pretty bad but he is eating and swimming around like nothings wrong. Has a hard time finding the food unless its on his good side:(
My aquarium is not balancing yet so I went and bought a 110 gallon stock tank to keep them in over the weekend. I'm going to fill it full of pond water so I know its good. I was planning to get one anyway for my indoor winter pond, just a little earlier then expected(won't my hubby be thrilled). They are VERY active fish and so lovely from above, I'm not sure if I want them in the aquarium(maybe aquarium can be for BABY wakin). They are so friendly too, already feeding and don't hide at the bottom when I look at them. They come up to the top and look like little whales surfacing with their humps before diving back down:)
Tropical Fish Warehouse did add an extra wakin for getting a late start I guess. She is a cutie too all white with one big and one small dot on her back. I will post pics, don't want to stress them too much more right now.
Hooray and congrats! I can't wait to see pics☺☺
Wakin update. My biggest one, Popeye, died this past week:( She started getting bloated, I actually thought she might be pregnant but I think she had an infection. She didn't pinecone, she just looked bloated.
Now the one in the 3rd picture and the free wakin's eyes are also looking worse. The 3rd one has a black spot behind the eye and black on some of its fins. The eye is bulging more then before. I've decided to treat them all with antibiotics, medicated food and 1tbsp of salt for every 5 gallons.
The first two in the pictures are the smallest and so far seem fine but I'm treating them to be safe. That little cutie in the first pic is a devil, constantly chasing everyone around and wanting to play:) They are all eating well too, so I'm hoping for the best. Hopefully after this week I will know more.
Oh! Darn! Sorry to hear that you're having trouble. The treatment regimen sounds good. I'm still going to get wakins next spring. They look so neat. I've tried to find the ebay seller you mentioned and couldn't. Could you d-mail me with the info?
Oh evesta, I just now had a chance to read other peoples threads and was sorry to hear about your fish dying. You and I are in the same boat with fish troubles! I hope things continue on a positive course for you from here on out! I'm sending you luck in the form of crossed fingers and toes!
Linda
The remaining four are still hanging in there. The one with the worst eye seems to have some healing. Don't want to think about how much I've spent on fish meds;)
Did I mention I got into the pond thing for the gardening? LOL Seems my love of fish is now taking over the hobby and turned into its own seperate hobby. 2,000 gallon pond, 20 gallon aquarium, 55 gallon aquarium, 110 gallon stock tank... what is next?
I asked my 2 year old son how many fish we had this morning and he said "All of them!!!" Yeah, pretty much:)
LOL-it is very expensive. My husband knows I spent a lot this month on medicines, microscope, treatments, new pond aerator that works like a jet plane (woo-woo) and other items to help with the "cure". I gave up treatments and returned the fish to the pond today. I've done everything that I think I can and now they need to heal or . . . There isn't anything more I can do.
