Does anyone know what kind of cat this is? It was in a crepe myrtle, and gave me a painful sting when I accidentally touched it.

I believe it's an IO Moth cat. Have you seen the moths around there? If it eats Crepe Myrtles you could try and raise it...carefully!

Wow, you dug up an old thread! I noticed names I hadn't seen in a while and then saw the date. I didn't know they were gregarious so that was interesting.

I'm pretty sure that the one. I went back a couple of hours later, and couldn't find it. It looked like a last instar, so maybe it made its cocoon somewhere.

Maybe so. Hopefully you will eventually see the adult! I have yet to see any of those cool moths here! The day I see a Luna, you will probably hear me too. :)
