All gingers go dormant where I live (zone 8b) if left outside in winter.
Do they go dormant naturally, or does the weather cause the dormancy? I'm specifically referring to hedychiums here.

Gay, it is prolonged exposure to cold that makes them go dormant. In the the simplist terms - the ground gets cold, they go to 'sleep'.
