Has anyone grown hostas in containers? Were they successful? What plants could go in the pot with them so it doesn't look "naked" all winter?
I'm a shade and container gardener by necessity and I love hosta, so I wondered if they can tolerate pots?
Hostas in containers?
I've got a hosta in a pot that a friend of mine pulled out of the ground. She divided it and gave me half. It is doing extremely well right now, but I will be moving it soon. I'll let you know how that goes.
I overwintered 4 pots of hostas last year which I would not have believed it possible in my cold zone. But not only did they grown beautifully last summer, but they thrived in their pots this summer as well. One of them needs to be planted this fall because it's grown to big for the container, but the other 3 will stay right where they are and will hopefully do just as well for me in '09.
ShadePlant, I've successfully overwintered Hostas in some of my container plantings, going on four years for one of them with 'Stained Glass' http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=1731190. I saw your recent posting of your "before-after" pics - looks like you've already planted some spectacular containers! You could add some of those wonderful Heucheras to resolve the "naked" look over the winter :)
I have lots of hostas in pots. I move them against the wall of the house for the winter, more to protect the pots than the plants. They do great but will outgrow the pot quickly.
