Discovered a Virginia Rail at my pond this morning here in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. Has anyone else seen one in this area?
Virginia Rail
Hi grete, Thats wonderful; I've never seen one in person.
Nice one! They're certainly mapped for NC, no reason you shouldn't get one if the habitat is right. They like plenty of dense waterside vegetation, but will stop briefly at more open pools on migration or when the young birds are dispersing (i.e., now!), looking for new homes.

Resin, you seem to know a lot about them, so is it odd that I have just one, not a pair, and apparently no siblings? Just one solitary (and reclusive) bird.
Probably on migration, then!
