Hi--I have done the mailbox in the garden for tools thing. I like it- a little whimsy and usefulness. If you have done this and could share a picture with me, I might be able to make an article out of this. Please? and thank you?~~they are the magic words!~~
oh forgot my pic- but its plain vanilla anyway.
mailbox for tools in garden? share pic with me 4 article?
I like the idea! But alas, there's no mailbox in my garden... I wonder if you could do a "theme" planting around it? Hmm, trying to think of plants with "mail" in the name... or maybe "pony express" or "postman"... or go punning and think of "male" plants like Peter Pepper? LOL
Chill, Jill-----I have my idea. Its a mailbox in the garden to put my tools in. I am going to tell how I got it (dumpster diving) rejuvenated it and what its handy for. Pic and list of the things I keep in mine. Stays dry and bug free. Then you put it in your garden and use it.
But mine is boring and plain. If anyone else has done it too, it might be a nice pic for the article.
There is a caladium named Postman Joyner.

:-) I know you've got your idea... I was just thinking about what I could do if I put a mailbox in my garden... I guess I'd have to get that caladium! or ignore potentially prudish neighbors and finally start some Peter Pepper seeds, LOL.
Well. hurry up, find a trashed mailbox, make it pretty, put some tools in, grow an instant vine and then take a picture for me!!!
Maybe yours just needs a little sprucing up... a "flag" of dried flowers, a sporty stripe of paint, even one of those seasonal fabric "sleeves" that they sell to dress up curbside mailboxes...
See, I'm just not a decorater at all! I am a functional gal at heart. OOh, I could tuck some black eyed susans behind its 'ear' (flag)
Yes, that's the idea... you could give it several temporary "looks" for your article... a tuft of BES blooms for August, a sporty blue stripe of painter's tape and a spray of red curling ribbon for July 4, a wreath of evergreens with a red velvet bow for the holidays... It wouldn't be half as silly as the way a neighbor of mine used to dress up a concrete goose on her front step!
Now Jill--idea person that you are. Do you mind if I do that in my article? the seasonal idea? I am just so NOT a decorate r person, I'd never think of that.
Or I can stick with my basic and let you take it a step further. Aunt A has a mailbox turned birdhouse but I told her I would probably not go there, maye later I would seperately, or she could
Unlike Jeremy, I firmly believe in giving my 50 worth at a time, not 500 $ in one article. I am in it for the money honey, even if the strokes are niiiiiiice.
Go for it! Especially if you need a couple more photos, you could just take your "vanilla" birdhouse and dress it up a couple of different ways for photo ops...
Of course, if anybody in the MidAtlantic Forum has a repurposed mail/tool box in their garden, it would be great to get some photos... but if not, yours could just step up and play a couple of different roles. A bunch of black eyed susans behind its flag, maybe a red/white/blue pinwheel for the 5th, dig out a Christmas wreath... and there ya go!
LOL.. even apart from not trying to put $500 worth of info into a $50 article, I figure that if I go on and on and on and on, people's eyes will glaze over and they will stop reading!
Thanks for adding to my idea. It's more my style to be sticking thigns on the mailbox than to make a whole painting project out of it. Mother Nature is my decorator.
yup-O on the posssible glaze factor.
No mail box here either but what about some garden style hooks added to the side or as a decoration on the mailbox. Maybe a garden theme refrigerator magnet to stick on the front. Have you seen those double pots that hang over the top of the mail box with a pot on each side and they have those pull on screen printed sleeves that slip on the mail box they sell them where they sell garden flags. You should be able to pick up something pretty cheap this time of year. Have you ever tried stencils, they are pretty easy.
HollyAnn- you have the makings of a fine article there! My plain Jane is on the schedule. I'm a functional gal! Moving on to the next article...hm...
Sally, At least you are writing, where as I have gotten held up in out of town visitors and vacations. Getting a very slow start here.
I was thinking about some cute quick things you could do to spruce up your mailbox picture.
Hope I didn't sound cranky there, Holly. I wouldn't mind a bit if you did your own mailbox in the garden, maybe have different mounting method and decor, Why not? Use mine as a starting point and take it further.
Just keep making some notes. I have about four draft articles in some stage, on a clipboard. on paper. Thoughts come to me out of the blue, and I add them. or jot down a new idea. Then when I have time, I've been able to pull one up and work from there. Can't wait to read you first article.
I'm trying real hard to keep up with articles for the money honey. I may have to get a real PT job one of these days.
Sally, I was at the US Botanic Garden on Sunday to take in their Sustainability Exhibit and I noticed that they had several bronze (copper?) mailboxes placed throughout the garden. Instead of tools, they held literature about the garden (maps, plant lists, etc.). I did not take any photos, but just thought I'd let you know where you could shoot some if you wanted to.
Thanks wrightie!
The exhibit was pretty wonderful, btw. And so was lunch at the American Indian Museum, just across the street... =)

No Sally not cranky. LOL
I was just trying to think of a way you could spruce up "your" mailbox quick and easy for your picture.
well, if you or critter doesn't snag this idea after my offering, I'm just gonna do it my self!! Thanks Holly
So many possibilities!
After wrightie's note- I might try the hammered metal spray paint like UniQueTreasures wrote about one time.
There's something I can do in fall or winter when I can't do any real gardening.
Your garden may just sprout a whole lineup of lovely mailboxes! I'll bet they've got all sorts of practical uses. :-)
