Might somebody assist me in identifying what I know is a hawk but what kind. I've looked in my Sibley's guide but can't narrow it down. It flew down and tried to catch a mournig dove which at first it was unsuccessful. Then it perched in a tree with it's back towards me. The feathers were a gray color. It didn't stay perched long enough for me to see much more. After about 10 min., when the doves had returned, it did indeed catch one but I couldn't get a clear look at the markings beneath the wings. Thanks.
Hawk?
Cooper's Hawk is the most likely hawk to go for a dove.
Resin
Thank you, Resin, I'll go to Sibley's now and read up on it. I know that raptors must eat but I do so hate to see them catch something.
