Theresa I don't think The Bare Naked Ladies (a Canadian Rock Band) are available for trade. Sorry I couldn't resist ^_^ Your thread title made me think of the band LOL.

Thats pretty cold for your part of the country. We had our first snow, so pretty and white.

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

LOL! That's funny, I'm looking for at least one myself. Oh wait......

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

LOL Tommy, you dirty bird!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

great info about naked ladies.
http://www.santabarbaragardens.com/articles/128_amaryllis_nls/arti_128.php.

Seems like late fall is best time for dividing/transplanting. Mine took more than 2 years to bloom. They finally decided to put on a show in 2009 and they were very pretty in their part-shade location. I also have some in full sun, and those did not bloom in 2009. Right now I have a nice, lusty patch of green strap leaves, totally unfazed by the cold.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Are you referring to Amaryllis belladonna or Lycoris species? Both genera are called "naked ladies." The lower the temperature in your area, the deeper A. belladonna bulbs must be planted. For example, if your lowest temperature is 10F, they should be planted 5-6" deep. In areas where the ground freezes deeper than that they might not survive.

Lycoris albiflora, L. radiata, and L. sanguinea, on the other hand, need to be grown frost-free. Even those Lycoris which can handle some frost cannot withstand SEVERE frost and should be protected where winter temps drop below 25F.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Fae, I was talking about a. belladonna. BTW, I also grow lycoris and I've yet to see blooms. but they're new, so I'll just wait. Since I get foliage, I presume all's well, just not ready to bloom.

I see that my question wasn't at all clear, vossner. I was trying to ask Theresa that question, and I should have done so specifically. Sorry!

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

faeden, Im interested in both....

North Chelmsford, MA(Zone 6b)

I think your zone makes naked ladies iffy. I tried three times; the third time I planted them where the chimney meets the house, facing southwest. They were protected and warm and one lived. It validated their other name--surprise lilies! I only hope it survives this winter.
I know there are several kinds of naked ladies--I wish I remembered what kind I have!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Fae, I understood you were asking theresa, I just butted in, lol

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL!! That's OK - I usually find it easy to confuse MYSELF, let alone others! HEHEHEHE

Theresa - It looks like neither the A. belladonna or the Lycoris are going to do very well for you in the ground. A. belladonna has a major root system, so if the bulbs are in a pot it needs to be a big one. I don't know about Lycoris's roots.

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

I grow mine in pots and bring them in for the winter. It works pretty good here in Michigan. Other potted bulbs I have and do good are peruvian daffodil, voodoo lilies, mexican shellflower, oxalis, calla.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

If you grow all of those, you know what you're doing. I think I've killed Tigridia pavonia (Mexican shellflower) at least 3 times.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Yes please share you secrets for the tigridia pavonia. I think I have faeden beat and have killed them every year for the last 5. I saw them at Home depot the other day and had to force myself away from them.

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

Its kind of a shooting match with them for me. Some years they grow awesome and some they either dont come up or die or dont flower. Dont flower is what happened this past year.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 6b)

Are Naked Ladies and Agrapantus the same flowers? I'm assumming they are bulbs?

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

they are not the same. Naked ladies are http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2377/ or
Lycoris squamigera, which are the ones I am looking for.

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7a)

Go to the Plant Scout and type in -- Lycoris Squamigera-- and you'll find 9 places where you can get them
