Hardy Hibiscus Question

Danville, IN(Zone 5b)

I'm new to all of this, so please be patient :-). I know this is a hardy hibiscus, but have no idea of the cultivar. My question is what are the seeds that can be harvested and restarted? See picture in next post ... is this what I should be collecting? Thanks.

Did you mean to post another pic?

If fertilized, your seed pod will form where the petals have fallen away and, when small, will look like a little button.

Here is a pic of a fairly well developed pod ~

Thanks, Moby. yes, I did intend to put another picture, but ended up starting a new thread with it ... I'm new to this and just trying to learn as I go. Thanks for your feedback ... I really appreciate it.

Any time :)

Would any of you know the best time to start these seeds indoors for transplanting next spring? I don't think I'm going to have a shortage of seeds and am willing to share, but I must issue the disclaimer that I have no idea if they are viable or not. Do they (the seeds) need to 'rest' a while before planting? I'm thinking of planting a couple now just to see if they will sprout. I would love to have another plant like this one and since I don't recall where I got it from I probably should try to clone this one somehow. Thanks for any input.

I'm don't think those are viable seed pods ~ I usually get a lot of those where a little pod starts and then falls off. A good pod will be about the size of a quarter and pop open when ripe. Here is a pic http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/6707/

Thanks, Moby. That helps me a bunch. Now I can throw out those 'wanna-be's' that I've been saving. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm going to have any viable seed pods ... I haven't seen anything like the picutre you referred me to. Your assistance is most appreciated.

You're welcome. I don't get very many pods that make it all the way to maturity, if that's any consolation. :)

I guess that is SOME consolation lol. I went back out to check the plant and low and behold I see one pod on there that looks like it has promise. It is very easy to tell the difference between that one and those that I had been collecting. As you said, this one is about the size of a quarter. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for it mature and pop open ... this is exciting lol.

Thanks again ... you're terrific.

Good luck with your seeds!
