I am trying to find on Dave's site on Plant Identification the list or true name for this plant. Anyone know the name please help.
Annato Seed/ Achiote Seed
Bixa orellana http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/55258/
Thanks for your help. I want to see if I can grow it down here. I use the dried seeds for flavoring my native dishes. Thanks again for your help.
I think it's going to be pretty questionable in zone 8, I've never seen it listed as hardy anywhere colder than 9b. Some trees can do OK being kept in containers, so if this is one that does OK with that and you have somewhere to put it for the winter then it might be manageable but if it has to live outdoors year round I'm not sure how much luck you'll have.
I think you may be able to keep this tree in a large container. It does not have to be terribly large to start producing flowers and seeds. If you think you could handle moving a 25 gallon or 23" grow pot, then you would be able to keep the tree in that pot for several years at least.
