Roses in containers
I'd be sitting there all day just admiring and enjoying the perfume of the Chrysler Imperial! Very well done...
Just beautiful, thank you for sharing.
Joanna - they are absolutely beautiful. Advice needed: I planted a rose in a container this summer and it has done really well. What are you going to do with yours over the winter? I have no idea and I have no place right now to plant it in the garden. Next spring i hope to have a new area ready where i can plant it but for now it will have to stay in the container. When i bought the rose it was supposed to be a miniature and I didn't think it would amount to much, but I don't want to lose it. It is probably at least 3 feet tall and very bushy and has bloomed well all summer. I'm in zone 5 and I see you are in zone 3 so you get quite a bit colder than we do. Eleanor
Hi Eleanor. I transplant all my roses in container into the veggie garden for the winter. I mound peatmoss about a foot high. If you have now where to plant your rose into the ground, then after it has gone dormant (leaves drop, ect) put in a cold storage area. Don't water it while in storage. Pull it out in March. If your storage is near freezing that would be good. Too warm or extreme freezing temps won't be good. I have over wintered a container in a heated garage, but made the mistake of watering it in January and it started to grow. I find the veggie garden method works the best
Thanks Joanna - I might be able to find a spot to transplant it for the winter in the new garden that I am making. I need to bring in some top soil and build a small retaining wall before the garden is ready for permanent plants but there is enough room to hold a rose bush for the winter. When is it ok to dig up and re-plant in the spring? Should I do it while it is still dromant or after it starts growing? Eleanor
Eleanor, If you mound mulch on it for the winter, you will probably want to start uncovering it in April, in stages. Perhaps every week, take 1/3 of the mulch of. As far as moving it, anytime when you can did in the soil. I transplanted a few last year just as they were starting to leaf out. Made a new flowerbed and it took longer than I thought. The roses transplanted fine even though they were almost fully leafed out.
Thanks so much Joanna! Eleanor
