Caravan Begonia

Denton, TX(Zone 7b)

I love the looks of the Caravan Begonia. I am a begonia newbie...would it be a good one to start out with? Are they an easy houseplant to grow?

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

Rose, you never know until you try.

I am not a begonia expert, but, I have learned not to over water them in the warm humid summer months. I have learned to keep a closer eye on them in the dry winter months. Mine all live outdoors year round. Most begonia are best as container plants here in Florida.

These are the ones I see at the nursery most often>

Thanks, Dale. I'm thinking of ordering one from Logee's.

Make sure when you get it that you start a new one for insurance. I've had a couple of Caravan plants and lost them both. Luckily I propagated the last one so I still have one.

Okay, do you just cut off a piece and stick it in water or dirt?

HCMC, they sound touchy. I always avoid those kinds of plants. My motto is "Your on your own".

We use rhizome kinds as ground cover>

Rose,

Cut off a stem and stick it in moist Perlite. Cover with a plastic bag or cup. It should root in no time.

Dale,

To each their own. Good luck in your growing.

Here is B. 'Caravan' at Harmony Foliage. Well worth growing.

Rose, I've had some success with this one. I bought mine from Logee's a couple of years back. It flowered for the first time this year. I grow it in a clay pot with a light mix-- send it outside in the summer and back under lights during the winter.

Thanks, Growhappy....good to know. I think it's the prettiest one I've seen.
