I ordered some plants off of eBay and I got them today... I was really upset as they were very special to me as it represented a very good friend.. It was Dimmer( Kim) Well I got Kim today and two others and when I opened the package and in there were two snails on the leaves.. Has anyone ever seen a snail on there plants? I don't mean a slug I mean a snail with a shell!!!! I will not put these plants with my others as I know better now... I will also put my marathon in it tomorrow morning... I did email the person I got it from and told them of the problem and also that her packing stunk... I also told her I would not be buying from her again.. This was the first time I left my people who I buy from on ebay... Thanks for letting me rant....

Susan

Egads Susan!! Never had that happen..I would have freaked too..I bet you didn't expect to see that when you opened your package....I would rinse them off good with water and take them out of the pots, examine them good and repot in fresh mix too...
Oh I plan to do that first thing in the morning... I guess I should have taken pictures of it before I tossed the snails but they freaked me out...LOL I know a snail when I see one and there were two of them... I am going to repot tomorrow and then put marathon in them and keep them away from all others... I know what they are going to say.. Can you send a picture... NO I just got rid of them... I am off to bed now and hope there are no snails in the bed..LOL
Hugs,
Susan
Wow Susan!!! I've never heard anything like that before. Do you think they added some actual dirt into their potting soil without sterilizing it and the snail eggs hatched? How in the world could they get on the plants? Unless maybe they were raising them on stands in a basement and the snails made their way onto the plants.
WIERD!!!
Yes wierd is the word... I still have the box they came in and I may later search for the snails to take a picture of them... threre were only two and they were on the leaves and they were tiny but big enough to know what they were... yuck... I am also going to go into the forum here where you leave bad feed back from a seller and post it so no one has to open the package and see them also...LOL
Hugs,
Susan
Susan,
I looked at Marathon instructions and it isn't listed as being useful for snail or slugs. I think if you just dusted the plants with diatomaceous earth, it would take care of any that might be hatching or in hiding. DE is made of little sharp shells that cut the slugs and snails bodies up.
I have some if you'd like it, I can come by tomorrow and drop it off - call me or drop me a EMail.
Terri
Hey Susan! The Diatomateous Earth is a good choice- Take Terri up on her offer. Snails aren't so unheard of in situation like these. Especially if the plants were greenhouse grown. I have a friend who decided to try orchids. She was SO excited to get her first one through a mail-order company...a very popular one most of us would recognise too...and was so disappointed when she got it along with snails. So it could happen to any one!
I hate having things in my plants when I buy them and to boot the plants are not that good either.. I have the DE and it was very nice of Terri to offer but that's what buds do...LOL Terri if you are reading this I did dmail you about maybe tomorrow if you are home.... They said they are going to give me my money back but so far they did not.. I had to cut 2 of the Kim's I got almost down to nothing... I washed them and then put the marathon in there and today will put the DE...
Will keep you all posted.... How you doing Diane? I have not seen you in awhile... You ok?
Hugs,
susan
Snails are more of an issue with Orchids, in my experience. When I get an order of Orchids, I set the pots in water for an hour or so. The snails have to come up to breathe and I just remove them by hand if I see them. I've not had a huge problem with them, but did have a couple in one order of Orchids. Haven't ever had them on Gessies, though.
I'm not really sure what to treat them with, but I'd probably unpot the plants, and swish them, roots and all, in slightly warm water to remove all the dirt, and potentially eggs, from the roots, then repot them.
Aw, sorry you got such disappointing plants, and with snails too! If you've got a good looking leaf or two on them, you might consider putting down a leaf to propagate a new plant or two as "insurance."
