How do you get a Kohleria to bloom???

They refuse to bloom! They're making new rhizomes, even putting rhizomes out on the top of the plant. They got pretty tall, so I cut them back and rooted the cuttings, but NONE of them will bloom. What's the secret? How much light do they need? I'm thinking it must be more than I'm giving 'em!

Mine bloom on a bright porch every summer, but they don't bloom for me in the windows in winter, but they WILL bloom under lights just fine. Perhaps they don't have enough light. They also perform better for me when they're moderately underpotted.

Hi Amy,

I couldn't get them to bloom till I put them right up to the lights. As close as I can get them without touching the bulbs. Now they bloom away.Mine love to be wicked too.

hmm ... I received a Kohleria rhizome in a trade a year or so ago. It did nothing! I don't know if it got buried too deep or what. I waited and waited and never saw anything, assume it rotted. I hope to try one again some day, they are beautiful plants!
