Best way to divide aroids?

What is the best way to take out the pups? Break it by hand? Shovel? Does division make the plant susceptible for rot down there?
Also Is there an easier way if you just want to thin out the plant and don't care about saving the pups?

yah they love water, but was thinking the tubers could rot when cut and then kept wet.
