I have a couple dozen Hosta seeds. They were purchased commercially and given to me as a gift, so I don't have any information other than what's on the label -- which just says "Fancy Hosta." I'm assuming they're supposed to be variegated, but we all know about growing Hosta from seed.
I'm thinking that I should start them indoors now, grow them over the winter, and plant them out in the spring. The spot I have in mind gets mostly dappled sunlight -- around a kid's playhouse under some 80-foot hackberries. Before the hackberries leaf out, the ground gets full sunlight. Depending on the time of year, the ground occasionally gets some morning sunlight. Grass grows there, but not much else.
Good spot? Good plan?

I grow hostas in dappled shade under a big Spanish oak that loses its leaves in winter. They do great. Growing the little plants inside until spring is a very good idea. I would think that by next winter the little hostas will be sturdy enough to survive. Good luck!
Thanks!
