She's now almost 6' tall and the lower leaves go yellow one by one and look burned at the edges. Before this she was lush with leaves and looked beautiful. Last year she did fine and bloomed well. This year - Yuk! And she hasn't even thought about forming a "y" to form blooms. First I thought it was a deficiency of micronutrients so I fed her with a combo. She has been getting her Miracle Grow all season about every couple weeks, but she's not doing well. Any suggestions?
What's up with my Maya?
is it in full sun.. where is it planted.. in the ground..or in a pot
More information needed: Is she in the ground? In a pot? If in a pot, when was the last time she was repotted in fresh soil? How much sun does she get? Burned leaf edges could be lack of water, sunburn or salt burn due to build up of salts in the soil. The leaves look pale probably due to lack of nitrogen. Brugs need to be fertilized at least once a week.
Sorry for info I left off -- planted in the ground (planted it last year and it did well), filtered sun, enough (not too much) water. Tell me about salt build up, Bettydee. I can't remember the name of what I used 3 weeks ago, but it was like Osmocote and says it lasts 9 months. Of course, I don't believe that with rain water and hand watering. It looked like this before I used it and I thought it would help and I would have thought 3 weeks was long enough. Maybe salt build up??
Salt build up occurs when water isn't run through the soil in potted plants every so often. I've never seen it around plants in the ground. I doubt that a slow release fertilizer like Osmocote could be the problem. It's generally too weak to do a Brug much good or harm unless you dumped the entire bag. The most likely problem may be not enough water. Hand watering may not be giving the plant a deep enough soaking and it's encouraging the roots to grow toward the surface, toward where the water is. Shallow roots dry out faster.
Thanks, Betty. I'm going to pour on the water and see what happens.
Sometimes I just put the hose on trickle and leave it for a couple hours per plant. It's slow enough that it doesn't run off and seeps into the gound.and I don't have to stand there trying to water patiently.. lol..I am anything but patient
