Probably not a hibiscus____but what is it?

Delhi, IA

Thought there was probably a shrub form, but didn't see one!! Is this possibly a Rose of Sharon? Is it hibiscus related? Our neighbor has it just starting to bloom. He's 88 and his wife planted it before she passed away. He thought it was a rose, but I'm guessing Rose of Sharon.

Can anyone verify who it is? Thanks. Would love something that blooms this time of year in Iowa. jam

There is a shrub forum--it's called Trees Shrubs & Conifers. But since Rose of Sharon is a species of hibiscus it's fine to ask about it here too (there's also a Plant & Tree ID forum where you can post any mystery plants). That being said, it could be a rose of sharon, but it would help to see a picture of the plant itself and the leaves to be 100% sure.

It's 5 foot tall and has many shoots from the base. Main trunk is about 2 1/2 inches in diameter.

After taking the photos I checked the base and found a plastic label cutting right into the trunk. Says Double Arden Rose/ Sharon.

I'm wondering the best way to propagate this plant. Here is a shot from the side.

Since it's a hybrid cultivar cuttings are your best bet if you want the babies to look like the parent plant. I've never done cuttings of these so I don't have any tips for you but I'm sure someone else around here will have some experience to share.

There is some "how to" information on this thread: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/888123/

I have a double rose of sharon and had trouble rooting it until I tried tip cuttings of green wood.

Good luck.

I suppose early spring after it leaves out is the best time. Thanks so much my friends. jam

This looks like a double lilac rose of sharon that I have in my back yard.
