some help please

hey yall,

my daughter bought a house and out front there were 6 hibiscus plants. they are blooming now and very bushy and tall. i dont know anything about them. can she cut them back? how much and when? also can they be separated to have some planted in other places around the yard. any help would be greatly appreciated. ttyl, tina

Can you tell us a bit about what kind of Hibiscus your daughter has? Are they the hardy type or tropicals?

Most hibiscus cannot be divided as they are shrubs, but many varieties can be rooted easily from cuttings. We need to know what kind she has though.....

i am so sorry but i would have no clue. i know one has purple flowers and one has orange flowers. other than that i would not know how to tell you. i am sorry

Can you post pictures? Someone here will probably recognize at least what species they are. Pics with flowers in bloom are best, but some species can be told apart by the leaves so if there's one that doesn't look like it'll have any blooms soon go ahead and post just the leaves.

That being said, I can't think of any hibiscus besides H. rosa-sinensis (the tropical hibiscus) that come in orange, so the orange is likely a tropical. The purple I think we'd have to see--there aren't any true purple hibiscus (although there is a related genus Alyogyne which has the common name "blue hibiscus" and it does come in various shades of purple). But there are a couple of species that could have lavender flowers if that's what you mean by purple.
