My son and I went to the local sunken gardens today. It is lovely, lots of ponds, streams and waterfalls. There are no fish in them because they are so extensive and shallow and I'm sure keeping fish in there would be impossible over the winter.
After having a lovely walk through all the trails we came across a dead orange koi, around 14 inches, in the pond. My son asked about the koi(he knows the difference between koi and other fish at 2 1/2, he is my boy after all...). I told him it was dead and obviously upset he told me "no, its just time for fish naps."
Obviously someone had just put it in there, it hadn't been dead long. After spending a minute at the garden it is obvious there are no fish in there and it is full of chemicals so fish can't live there. Are people stupid? It makes me so mad. The koi didn't even have a chance. It was a nice koi, I'm sure many people would of loved to have it in their pond. Couldn't they post it on craigslist or in the paper? I'm so angry, I'm about ready to write the newspaper about it. We are in a small town and that is what people do when they are angry about something;) Sorry, had to vent...
Mad about needless koi death
I am sure it must have outgrown someone's small pond and they thought this would be a great place for it. Sounds like they did not think it through like you or I would have done. These are the same people that think releasing their turtles and such into the woods is a great thing when they get tired of them. They figure that animals have an "instinct" to surive without considering just exactly what they need in order to even have a fighting chance.
I know, I use to be that person. My first goldfish when I was a kid was two fancies in a bowl... They died within days, I've learned so much. It is just so much easier in this day and age to be informed that it makes me sad. If it had been a natural pond it wouldn't of been so bad but it is obviously full of chemicals:(
