I ordered one through Park Seed and it took 3 years to get it. But it is doing poorly. I saw a couple of blooms last year but the cold seems to have bitten the leaves this year. However, the plant is alive. I gave a big dose of composted manure a few days ago. What fertilizer do you use? Do you give it any lime? My soil is quite acidic. Any other tips would be helpful. I really need a nice blooming shrub in my shady areas.

It shouldn't need to be limed as it is an acid loving plant and I'd try giving it a light, organic fertilizer like Planttone or Hollytone. Normally they're very easy to grow but they will take much longer to become established in colder zones like yours. It's too bad you don't live near Raleigh; the specimens our nursery received were gorgeous and already 3 feet tall!

Maybe I'll boost it a little. It's so funny because I looked on plants files and it seemed to like slightly acid to neutral. So I thought it could use a little lime, but I won't do that if yours are doing so well.
How long is the normal bloom sequence?

Honestly, I don't remember how long it bloomed last year although I want to say it was about 3-4 weeks. I do remember that it bloomed in late summer or early fall.

Thanks for all the help. I was shocked to see how big it could get, lol.

We planted this guy, which we received in a 4" pot, in our front, east-facing garden. It languished for a few years. Last year, suddenly, it perked up, put out new growths and then flowers. It does not really die down in the winter here, in Northeast NJ (zone 6). It is very pretty, bright-green leaves and smallish, burgundy flowers.
I had completely forgotten its name, but then my husband remembered it was Mexican-something.
I recommend. Sometimes plants' behavior defies their defined zone of growth.

Mine, too, has done much better. It blooms a lot more this year and is quite a bit larger. Becaus the blooms are smallish, we are thinking about moving it closer to the house. it would have to like a LOT of shade, though
