Hi,
I have short listed seven (7) plumerias that i would like to purchase for next year, probably with the coop that you suggested I create for folks in Canada. Here they are:
1. Bali Palace
2. Daeng Sayem
3. Magnus Opus
4. Negril
5. Scott Pratt (are Daeng Sayem similar or are they totally different?)
6. Vera Cruz Rose
7. Aussie Confetti or Barbados showgirl--Dutch, I saw you posted on another forum that it is difficult to tell the two varities apart. The deciding factor for me would be compact growth and fragrance.
I could not find growth habit for most of them. I am looking for compact growth and strong fragrance. Your input would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Charmaine
Plumeria short list - need your input
Daeng Sayam (VERY different from Scott Pratt) compact and great bloomer.
Vera Cruz Rose is a monster grower, it gets bigger than almost any other plumeria in my yard; fabulous scent though.
Scott Pratt is a horizontal grower. Not much in the way of fragrance but very deep dark red blooms
Negril - pretty compact for me, wonderful clove scent (and please consider Grove Farm in this category)
Bali Palace - pretty compact
Magnum Opus - pretty compact for me.
Think about adding Celadine - the classic lei flower, a great bloomer, good compact plant and fabulous scent.
I am sure others will have information to complement this.
Hi Dutch,
Thanks for the info. It's bad about Vera--I saw Clare's picture and I fell in love. Do you have Vera planted in the ground or in a container? I would like to hear from other members regarding Vera in container.
In the description for Scott Pratt, it says that it has a spicy fragrance. Dutch, I am surprised at your commentary regarding fragrance/scent. Also, what's fragrance like for Bali Palace and Magnum Opus?
It seems that Celdaine is a must have, so someone got to go! I wonder which one..hmm?
Thank you again for your input. That's experience one can count one!

I agree with what Hetty said about everything. Here is my input on just a few things:
I don't have a Bali Palace, but it made me think of 'Bali Hai Whirl,' which is one of my favorite fragrances and the only double plumeria. Mine will be blooming shortly.
I had a 'Scott Pratt' but I sold it because the fragrance was very mild. My 'Siam Red' (Daeng Sayam) has not bloomed yet so I can't describe the fragrance on that one. I just had to graft a tip of mine to save it as it has started rotting from the base over the winter.
Magnum Opus is lovely, but I detected very little fragrance from it so I sold mine.
Negril was a tall-grower for me, but it had a very nice fragrance. The only reason that I sold mine was that I have a seedling that smells just like it that I like better. I totally agree with Hetty that 'Grove Farm' is a must-have for fragrance.
Vera Cruz Rose is lovely, but it is a tall grower. It's fragrance is just like a rose so, if you have roses, they make a nice substitute!
what does grove farm look like?
wow thats nice... i was thinking about adding a few for fragrance to my collection when i get some money.... its another one to consider
Hi everyone I think that I have grove farm it is blooming now,my question is my plant started out in a pot then I put it in the ground , it has been there about 18 months, but I did not know it was going to be such a fast and large plant. I would like to know if I can dig it up and move it because it is too close to the fence I do not want to lose my plant it is too special to me I only have four and this is the largest and it is blooming, thanks to Dutch lady for helping me.after she told me how to feed it, that baby just did her thing. Please help me if it is not a good idea to move it let me know if it is then when should I do it I live in Orlando. thanks
Here's my 'Grove Farm.'
Just to add to what Hetty said -- plumerias are remarkably resistance to being transplanted and moved. I do it all the time, and they seem to experience no shock at all, but I do water with Vitamin B1 after I transplant or move a plumeria. When you dig up, get as much of the root ball as you can and then transplant and water with Vitamin B1 added to the water. If you live in an area that freezes -- and I think Orlando is in 9b so it does freeze there -- then dig yours up in the fall to store it for the winter and then replant in the spring, and be sure to remove all the leaves as Hetty said after you dig it up and before storage.
what does it smell like?
ok that does it... im getting it!... when i find a source (that i can afford lol)
PS nice description, Hetty im gonna go smell some nutmeg now lol

Yes, nutmeg. Florida Colors Nursery is the most affordable source that you'll find in my opinion!
ok im looking and i have like, 3 others in my car too. how is bali whirl's fragrance??
how is the fragrance on lurline??
i like that place too. i saw a yellow one that they said they named after you commented that it reminded you of an italian drink i was like "cool"
mmhmm lol
Thanks for the advice on moving my plumeria ,I will move them in the fall and make sure that I get as much of the root ball as I can thanks again I knew I could count on this family, I think between all of you there is not anything I could ask and I would not get the answer. Thanks again.
Lurline smells like Spicy rose.
hmmmm nice
You may want to hold off purchasing a 'Lurline' from Florida Colors Nursery. My 'Lurline' from them doesn't exactly match other pictures of 'Lurline' that I've seen even though it is the same as the one they have pictured on their web site. I think it is possible there could be a name mix-up. It could be a case of different environment-different bloom, but my blooming 'Lurline' looks the same as their blooming 'Lurline.' Anyhow, mix-ups happen in every business so it wouldn't be uncommon.
i noticed tat there were two lurlines on their site when i went. one was called just 'Lurline' and the other was 'Thai Lurline'. its the thai one i was considering

http://www.floridacolors.com/thai%20lurline.htm
Oh, yes, the 'Thai Lurline' is the prettier of the two in my mind.
that's the one i was thinking about
Hi Everyone,
I am very pleased with your feedback of my short listed items. As you can imagine, I am busy refining the lits. Here it is:
1. Bali Palace
2. Daeng Sayem (a must have)
3. Magnus Opus
4. Negrill ( a must have)
5. Vera Cruz (still hesitating on this one - growth habit is still throwing me off)
6. Grove Farm (because it smells like nutmeg..) however, I am not crazy about the color)
I just realized that I have no white. Please suggest a beautiful compact white with fragrance.
Thanks,
Charmaine

or maybe dwarf singapore??....for the compact-ness
Dutch - Is this the same variety listed at Florida Colors 'Singapore'?
Clare - St. Germain is a beauty. I will do some more research on the Dwarf Singapore and Dwarf Decidious.
Dutch - Thank you again for suggesting Dwarf Decidious.
