Looking for Polish Pullets in WA State

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hi there,

So we are looking for Polish, silkie, and/or bantie silkie crosses. I'm mainly interested in a buff polish, long story, but I should have gotten the one I saw in the first place, cuz now she's gone to another home. :`-S

Any Washintonian's or recommendations for where to look?

BTW - for those that saw my first post, Dinney is now with a new happy owner and will have 4 older sisters to keep her in line! ~8-D

lol, do the new owners want another Dinney? seems I may have one on hand :o(

Hey, Lazy lady - I am in Rochester. SWW fair in Chehalis is 8-12 to 8-17. Usually have polish, but don't know if they will be for sale. Could call them.

Also, we have an auction where I got my 1st polish years ago. Used to be in Chehalis every saturday. See now they are just outside of Oakville 1st & 3rd saturday of month...... Here's a link. The farm itself, may have what you are looking for?

Up for road trip? Sorry, I got out of getting new chickens / quail / pheasant a year or so ago. Have a few banty's ; two torn up polish (one had splayed leg - now twisted) & 3 standards left. And of course, my peafowl......lol

yay! sis to the rescue :o)
tee hee... I knew she would have some ideas :o)

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I'll have to check those options out. We were also thinkinga bout taking the kiddos to the Clark Co. fair tomorrow (it ends this weekend). Who know's maybe someone will know something there?

1Anjl - Dinney was number 5 for her flock. I think she's done, but she did mention she seems to be in the "habit of rescuing". hehe I was cracking up, she left with her in her lap -- her husband was driving. Pretty rediculous sight... Dinney was looking out the window as they pulled away.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

lol, mine may become 'Shish-kabob' more of a he/she name :o)
if he/she doesnt stop pecking me!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

i would say poor dinney, more like poor husband of denny's new ownere LOL

here is a list of hatcheries. i don't know how current it is, but WA is toward the bottom. i would not go by what is listed as ALL they have, just what they were specializing in the last time the list was edited...

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Never ended up using any of them. Got most of our chicks from local breeders or hatching eggs mailed in from other locations.....

I will be at fair next week. Will let you know if any for sale or??? And will check at auction at the end of the month.... never sure about health of those on craigs list.. risky. Most I know of on vacation right now for fairs & rodeos around the state......

Some help I am!!

edited: thanks TF for listing site! Not very many here in WA. Have 3 commercial chicken farms down the road; but don't sell to public - besides they are the caged for life, never walk poor things. just used for eggs, then? for frozen foods.... sad, sad life for them :-(

oh, we are getting a new egg fatory about 3 hours from here in Farwell. dubbed the MILLION EGG A DAY farm. huge metal buidling, with a conveyor belt under the cages to carry off the poo. the belt is a mile long... i am sickened...

Lodi, United States

In Britain they have Hen Rescue and Rehabilitation Societies for ex-battery chickens. Like the Greyhound Rescue Organizations. They say they look just awful when you get them, skinny, hardly any feathers and problems walking--but with care many recover beautifully and go on to lay eggs for several years. Most are less than two years old--in Europe (& The UK?) the factories are suppose to clear out their laying chickens every year, in the States they do it after 2 years. I looked for US chicken rescue orgs. on the Internet and couldn't find any.

hmm, i know there are some. once in Ohio or KY at the Buckeye Egg Farm [not in reference to the Buckeye chicken] about three years ago, maybe four, a tornado hit, and the place was in ruins. there was a HUGE stink because the company was leaving the hens to die o fdehydration and starvation, and not permitting rescuers in. they got in anyhow, and saved who they could. the pictures were horrible, i will never forget. i came across it when googling fo rinfo on the Buckeye Chicken...

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

People can be barbaric! It is just so sickening. Kudo's to U.K. for having a rescue org for these poor babies. What kind of life can they possibly have in a cage for life? No sun, grass, fresh air? We may eat them in the end, but at least they had a decent life! Mass production in such small spaces, just ticks me off! (insert angry face here)
There is a veal production farm over by out elementary school. Lucky if those baby cows have 4ft x 6ft pens. They are outside in mud & muck their whole short lives. Never get to chew or walk on fresh grass........sick! How can anyone know there food is safe when it is living in these conditions all of the time!

On a better note: any luck on the Silkie cross? Or another pullet? Did you decide?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I don't understand how people can live with themselves when treating animals that way. No, I'm not a vegetarian, but I still think the animals should have a humane life while on this earth!

No luck so far, I think I've decided not to get a polish for the time being. I really like them and met the nicest one EVER on Thursday, but that one seemed an awful lot like a little roo and I'd hate to get attached and then have to give him up when he starts to cockle-doodle-doo!

Beyond that one little guy, I also have doubts about them being picked on. I've just read too much about them not being able to see too well and therefore being an easy target from the other hens.

I think I'll try to get that silkie cross tomorrow... I'm going to a birthday party in the neighboring city and plan to swing by after it. I'm crossing my fingers its not a craigslist game though, the lady has responded multiple times, but has yet to give me an address or phone number. ugh!

Gate (Rochester), WA(Zone 7b)

Had the same issue with the lady I bought peachicks from. Finally got to go out there. Now I see why I wasn't getting all my answers & why hard to get a hold of.... quite the little farm she had going out there...... Lots of chickens, goats, peafowl, a horse, dogs and garden. Always outside or at a fair somewhere. Saw the neatest chicken tractor made out of spare farm parts while there. It's on DS camera, he liked it a lot. Even talking about animals and, and, and again...... lol. Think it's in the blood....

Edit ~ on the polish, the pecking thing. My roo got tore up pretty bad by the other roo banty's. their crest tends to get pecked at a lot too - especially while roosting. Others just reach over & pull feathers out. Easy & right there in front of them...... Now that I have them separated for a bit, feathers growing back in well.

Yessssss!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

tee hee..chicken fairy at it again?

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh yea she is at work. Hope you get your chickens.

I have all kinds mixed in, silkies, bantams, crested, standard. So far I am not having problems with fighting, they all like each other. But I will be separating them this fall/winter.

My little frizzles are looking like they have mange??? I can see their pink skin.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

wel, they are half naked. even when they fully feather. they have the slow feathering/ light feathering gene in there somehow, becasue of the frizzle mutation... so you gotta get used to seeing the skin LOL

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

ok thanks, I was getting worried I seen another one yesterday and it was looking really bad.
