Our first (frog or toad ???) visit to our pond-which is it?

Deer Park, IL(Zone 5b)

I took a picture of this little guy a few minutes ago. Please tell me is it a frog or a toad? We purchased a few tadpoles about 2 months ago-could this be one of them all grown up? Do they grow that fast?

Can you count it's toes? If it has 4 toes in front, and 5 toes in back, it's a toad. If not, it's a frog. We found a toad yesterday, and googled, so that's how I know this useless bit of information. LOL!!

Hard to count those toes but if I had to guess based on the toes I would lean towards frog. Lily-what do you guess?

I was like a little kid seeing him-very excited! My 6 and 8 year old kinda were surprised at my reaction . . . I like this ponding "sport".

I never knew the difference and no one I've ever asked knew either. Everyone said it's how large it is - but babies are little regardless. Mine are so fast it's hard to tell. But I had one the size of my 2 hands - it was grosssssss.

Funny you say gross and I think "cute" but maybe 2 hand size is a little too much "cute".

It was ALOT to much. I honestly am not over stating this. My 18 year old thought so too until he saw it in my fishing net. I wanted the monster to live somewhere besides my little pond. If you put both hands together side by side - that's exactly how large it was sitting - not stretched out.

I'm guessing frog. BUT, I'll wait to give a final call after I pick up my daughter from daycare so she can look at the picture and "advise." At 10 years old, she is the expert on such things. LOL!

My guess is it is a green frog: http://www.inhs.uiuc.edu/cbd/herpdist/species/ra_clamita.html.

If so, I have one and it is not scared off easily, which is nice. She hangs out, even while I'm pulling out the algae in the stream, uless I get real close then she hides.

All my frogs flip out when I get close to the pond. They dive !

Looks like a bullfrog to me. The big mouth and green lips are a giveaway.

A frog.
I too was amazed at how fast tadpoles hatch, but then they seem to take quite a long time to develop into frogs. I thought a couple weeks would do it, but mine have been six or eight weeks so far. and still have sizable tails. Although a couple of them have made toadhood lol just TINY little things. I guess all that depends on what kind they are...

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that link didn't work. Let's try again.

Looks like they are very similar species. I think you'll have to look at the toes (best difference I could find when reading the two).
